Cannot import pictures with iPad Pro 2018 and Canon 5D Mark IV

Hi there,

today I got my new 11“ iPad Pro (2018) with USB-C connector. Like it was mentioned on Apple‘s website I connected my Canon 5D Mark IV via USB to USB-C cable to the iPad Pro. The Photos.app is launched as expected but there is no option to import the pictures from the camera.

Does anybody else have this issue? Maybe also with another camera?

There appear to be at least two issues here:

  1. Using Apple's official USB-C -> SD Card adapter connected to my iPad Pro 11 (2018), and using an SD Card with photos shot on my Canon 5D Mark IV -- The iPad shows an "error" indicator (with no additional detail) when attempting to import a Dual Pixel RAW. Importing JPEGs and regular (non Dual Pixel) RAW files works fine.
  2. Connecting the Canon 5D Mark IV directly to the iPad Pro 11 (21018) via USB (with a USB 3.0 Micro B -> USB-A cable and Apple's official USB-A -> USB-C adapter) -- does not work at all. The iPad launches the Photos app, but the import tab never comes up. When I do a similar setup with my iPhone (using the same USB cable and Apple's Lightning to USB Camera adapter) it works fine, including allowing me to transfer Dual Pixel RAW files.

Crazily, if I import the Dual Pixel RAW file onto my iPhone and let it sync with iCloud so that it appears on my iPad, everything works fine. I can view the file in Photos on my iPad, and also import it into Lightroom on the iPad. Once it syncs with the Lightroom cloud and ends up on my desktop, I can confirm that the file routed through the clouds is identical to the file on the SD card (SHAs match). So, it seems like the iPad supports Dual Pixel RAW files, it just doesn't support importing them. (And also doesn't support a direct USB connection to the camera.)

So... the workaround is:

  1. Turn off Dual Pixel RAW. You can turn off Dual Pixel RAW in the menu: Menu > Camera Section > Section 1 > Dual Pixel RAW > Disable.
  2. Use the SD Card adapter instead of a direct USB connection.

Or alternatively:

  1. Import your Dual Pixel RAW photos using an iPhone, and route them through cloud(s) to get them on your iPad. Obviously, this may introduce huge workflow challenges depending on your internet speed.

If you'd like to read more about Dual Pixel RAW, and what you're potentially giving up if you turn it off, here's a good article: https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/learn/education/topics/article/2018/june/whats-new-eos-5d-mark-iv-dual-pixel-raw-images/whats-new-eos-5d-mark-iv-dual-pixel-raw-image

Hallo new iPad Pro (2018) users !

I believe I found the solution for your problems ( even the APPLE hotline couldnt help me and gave me wrong infos on top,

like : "You MUST use a cardreader - USB-stick doesnt work" !?!! ) .

*********************************************************************************************************

You CAN import VIDEOs and MOVIES and all kind of pics from USB-sticks if you prepare them as follows :

*********************************************************************************************************

FIRST OF ALL YOU MUST CREATE 2 FOLDERS ON YOUR STORAGE-DEVICE ( for photos / videos ) !!

"DCIM" and next to it "MISC" ( Info : Its the same way as created on storage devices by all digital-cameras )

  • leave MISC empty !
  • open DCIM and create another folder in it ="100CANON" ( Other titles might also work - IMPORTANT = 8 digits ! )

100CANON is now your target folder to put all pics and vids in !!

--

PHOTOS : Rename them to "IMG_####.jpg" ( take care to use 8 digits, not more and not less !!!! )

Example = IMG_9012.jpg - IMG_901.jpg will not be recognized !

( programs like IRFANVIEW have batch functions which makes it easy to RENAME a lot of pics FAST )

Before you transfer/import them to your iPad = create a specific folder for them on the ipad in the photo-app !

.....................

VIDEOS !! : Yes, it is possible to watch all your videos / movies on your NEW ipad !!!! ;-)

The final format of the videos must be *.MOV or *.MP4 = means you must convert your videos first if

they have a different format !! I suggest *.MOV = works 100% for me ! ( final size to be 4GB or less )

I am a windows user ( using fat32-formatted sticks / maybe NTFS-sticks will also work, then you can transfer

videos, bigger than 4GB = someone should test it and post the result here !! )

Source the net for video-converters ( freeware ) = you will find a lot !

Once you have the *.MOV - movie you will have to RENAME IT - took me a long time to find out how it works !!

The name of the video MUST consist of 8 digits ( exactly 8 !! ).

Example : 12345678.MOV ( if 123_5678.MOV or VIDEO-234.MOV or..... = will not be recognized ! )

To avoid confusions ( as the video name is not visible on the iPad ) I prepared specific folders with the name

of the videos and after that I copied the corresponding videos in these folders !

ENJOY !!

Thank you so much! I followed your suggestion, and ipad pro finally allowed me to import the photos from my sd card. Also, for *.mp4 files, you have to follow camera roll's naming schema as well.

For example: MVI_0001.mp4

Cheers!

The plot thickens!

I purchased this USB-C card reader from Amazon: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B076MF378H

When I shoot dual pixel RAW to a CF card, I *am* able to import them onto the iPad using the above card reader. However, when I shoot dual pixel RAW to an SD card, I *cannot* import them using the above card reader. I get the same failure as reported with the official Apple USB-C -> SD Card reader. The images show up in the "Import" tab of photos, but I get an "error" exclamation point when trying to import.

So to summarize:

Importing to 2018 11-inch iPad:

  • Plugging camera directly in through USB cable and official Apple USB-A -> USB-C adapter -- photo app opens but import tab never shows up
  • Using Apple USB-C -> SD card -- cannot import Dual Pixel RAW, can import regular RAW
  • Using above USB-C card reader and a CF card -- can import everything
  • Using above USB-C card reader and an SD card -- cannot import Dual Pixel RAW, can import regular RAW

Importing to 2017 iPhone X

  • Plugging camera directly in through USB cable and official Apple Lightning -> USB-A camera adapter -- everything works as expected (all files can be imported)

i tested further and its perfectly working with

  • Canon Powershot 100 S
  • Canon 7D
  • Canon R

but NOT with the Canon 5D Mark IV also not with only 1 card in the camera (i tested with 2 different 5D . mine and from a friend)

the Gallery Opens on connect but the import doesnt get activated

another problem seem to exist if you put 2 cards in a card reader with 2 slots

  • the gallery show only one cards content and after discarding it the import screen is still shown and doesnt get closed
  • having only one of my 5d mark iv cards in . its working like expected
