Text-to-speech in IOS doesn’t pause on periods (full stop)

This has been asked repeatedly and for a long time. Yet, not only there are no answers, but the original questions are so old I had to start a new thread.

curiously, I found the Issue of text-to-speech pausing on commas but ignoring the pause on periods and paragraphs while experimenting on. Kindle Fire device in the kindle app.

i compared the voice quality to the one in IOS and I concluded that txt2speech quality on my very cheap kindle Fire ($40) was better and more human sounding than on my much more expensive and powerful iPhone and iPad.

however, I realized that both voices had the same issue: the narrating would pause appropriately on a comma, but blow right through an end of sentence period and even a end of chapter.

assuming that Amazon and Apple use different technologies, why would both display this same annoying shortcoming and why would both ignore their users clamoring for better text to speech capabilities.

According to the age of the forum posts I have read, some complaints are as old as 2012.

obviously, it is possible for a narrating voice to pause to reflect punctuation. Both kindle Fire and IOS devices do so on commas.

all that’s needed is for the narrator to pause at least as long, if not a bit longer, when reading a period, and insert a longer pause at the end of a sentence.

i know that in MacOS it is possible to tweak this pause, and I assume that’s also possible in IOS.

Yet, the only practical answers I read involved editing the text to add multiple commas where periods were found. How silly is that.

Both Amazon (Android) and IOS have very advanced narrating voices for book reading. Lately they have improved to the point where more than once I had to make sure I wasn’t listening to an audible audiobook.

yet both companies seem unable to fix this very simple issue And they keep ignoring requests to address the issue.

I am frankly stumped by this. Is Audible really so powerful That Amazon (Audible’s owners) and Apple are willing to cripple their text-to-speech software to make audible more appealing? Honestly I don’t see any other explanation for this annoying behavior. If anyone has a better explanation, I am all ears.

all I want is the ability to have my Kindle app, on my iPad, iPhone or my Kindle Fire cheap *** tablet, to pause a fraction of a second after a period. Amazingly, Alexa can inflect questions very credibly, but it blows by period, end of chapter, chapter title and new sentence, narrating it as if it was all written in a single like unpunctuated. Does that make sense?

At the very least, I’d like to know why this happens to the best two voices in the mobile market.

iPad, iOS 5.1.1

I found a work-around:

Under GENERAL > SPEECH > VOICES > ENGLISH: Select ALEX.

It seems ALEX voice does account for the period symbol. I'm unsure if this is due to Alex being a newer development int the voice options and that they finally fixed this issue with this voice.

I was using DANIEL (enhanced) voice (which I prefer) but it wasn't pausing for periods.

Maybe try experimenting with other voices to see if any other voice options have fixed this issue.

PS - Alex voice isn't amazing. So Pick your poison... a better voice (such as Daniel - enhanced) that doesn't stop for period symbols, or Alex, who stops for periods, but sounds like rubbish.

I totally agree. I too use text2speech on my ipad to read ebooks, and as the above user mentioned, it pauses on comas and continues on through periods. Baffling and bewildering.

conticreativeI found your question by googling "iphone text to speech doesnt pause on full stop".

If someone can please explain (or better still, provide a FIX or WORKAROUND) it would be much appreciated.
