After upgrading to MacOS Mojave it is not possible for me to invoke to the Startup Manager using the Option key after restart in order to use a different booting disk. The system is just booting Mojave ignoring that I am pressing the Option key.
How can I invoke the Startup Manager when the Option key doesn't work?

There isn't another way. Did you try setting the startup disk in System Preferences > Startup Disk? FWIW, the option key works for me. You don't have a 2018 MacBook Pro by any chance rather than the 2017 in your profile? If so, see…
You can also try resetting the SMC.

When connecting a linux live usb to the MacBook Pro, it is not shown in System Preferences > Startup Disk. I have a 2017 Macbook Pro so the the About Secure Boot option is not available in my case.
Holding down the Shift key during booting enters the Safe Mode. The problem is that the Option key does not open the Startup Manager where I could choose the usb drive to boot from. In the past that worked always without any problems. Now that I upgraded to Mojave this Option doesn't work anymore.
On a side note, I know someone who has the same Macbook Pro (but from 2018) who has no problem loading into the Startup Manager after installing Mojave.

Did this person try booting from your live Linux USB?
After running the First Aid for the Macintosh Hard drive I am getting this response.

Maybe this error message has something to do with failing booting the Startup Manager.
Why would a Linux drive show in System Preferences or in the Startup Manager? Unless you have something like rEFIt installed as an alternative boot manager it won't.
Let's try this again. You cannot boot your Mac from a Linux USB which is why when you hold the option key it boots straight into Mojave. Take care.

Forget about the Linux part. I just want to load up the MacOS Startup Manager while holding down the Option key and this does not work.
If you are doing a restart, wait till the screen goes from dark gray to black. If from shut down, hold it soon after your press the power key.
