Text replacement not working in Mojave

I updated recently to Mojave, and noticed that my text replacement shortcuts are not working anymore. I’ve checked through System Preferences - Keyboard - Text, and they are all still there but not working. I’ve done a restart but still nothing.

Anyone got any ideas on how to fix this problem?

I was hoping someone would have a more elegant solution, but I guess my workaround is better than others' so here it is:

  1. Go to keyboard > text replacement
  2. Create/ add any dummy text replacement row (literally anything)
  3. Delete the row
  4. Text replacement will start working again.

For some reason, your computer forgets about Text Replacement after 30 seconds of loading (try it - restart your mac and use text replacement immediately and it'll work. After 10 more seconds, it'll stop). The above helps your mac remember again. I'm no programmer but I imagine something blocks the text replacement and is loaded after text replacement, and the above re-enables it.

I've been having this problem with for years. It's one of those annoying and persistent little quirks that cramps my workflow. I created customer text replacement snippets which I use as email canned responses/phrases to common client question, as well as for signing my emails, independent of browser or email client.

I've noticed it happens basically every time I restart, and my Mac seems to "forget" about the text replacements. No amount of tweaking "Keyboard Settings" or checking each app's "EDIT > SUBSTITUTIONS > TEXT REPLACEMENT" fixes the problem.

Usually after a few hours I notice that my text replacements are back working again, but I see no rhyme or reason as to how or why. Anyone?

Thank You,

I used the same fix before, and forgot about it! Even if Edited, one item, instead of Deleting it, or Creating a New Item, it would "remind" my macOS 10.14.3 about my Text Replacements! Logging Out and back in, and Restart would help too, but today it didn't! But, the Edited, Text Replacements would still work on iPhone, iOS 12.1.4!!! Then I tried your Steps 1-4, and it worked INSTANTLY on my Mac 10.14.3!!!

It's clear to me that this FEATURE, Text Replacements, is GREAT, when it works!

It is obviously connected to the iCloud, which is how it Syncs!

As I was Troubleshooting this issue today, I did look at https://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/ and it was All Green = No Problem! So maybe there was a glitch there!

But even then, after seeing this Thread, it is obvious to me that Apple needs to improve this Feature, because I am not the only one having problems with it! Today, my Text Replacements in entire Letter B all did not work! Then your fix, Steps 1-4 Fixed it!

I also use this feature for Cyrillic Text Replacements, and some of them refuse to work! But, when I change the First Letter of the Trigger Text, it fixes it! Again, Apple needs to make sure that whatever Unicode etc. Table Translation is accurate in this Feature!

Ideally, I wish this Text Replacements Feature was as full featured as TextExpander, or close to it, that way there would be less Privacy Concerns, and no need for using TextExpander keyboard on iOS.

Again, THANK YOU for your Steps 1-4.

And Thanks in advance to Apple for your help!

P.S. This issue with Text Replacements goes back several macOS Versions, long before Mojave 10.14.3! Yes, it is working better, but not conistantly!!! Obviously Apple has more important priorities, and this feature is for more advanced users, and thus is not critical, but still... I'ld love to see it work at least as well as it's supposed to now, before the new features are added!

Maybe my situation, with Mixing of English and Russian Cyrillic Replacements is confusing, is too much for this Text Replacements Functionality! But, given all achievements by Apple, I am sure they have what it takes to fixes such situations as my Multi-Lingual needs, and even the Basic Features, which do not work as constantly!

I've been asking AppleCare about this for YEARS! I hope other users will do the same, in order to Inspire a Sooner Fix 😊 !!!

Thanks in advance for your help, Dear Apple!!!
