Is it possible to connect Macbook HDMI to a (Mini) DisplayPort monitor?

I have a Dell Monitor with 4 inputs: 2 x HDMI, DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort. I was hoping to use the latter two inputs with various HDMI devices I have, such as my MacBook Pro.

I bought a couple of cables... HDMI to Display Port and HDMI to Mini Display Port without realising that these work in one direction only (from the DP output on a laptop to the HDMI input on a monitor).

What I need is a bidirectional version of these cables, or at least one that will work from the HDMI output of my MacBook to the DP inputs on the monitor.

My question is: does such a cable (or adaptor) exist, or am I wasting my time searching?

Don't do that!

You can plug a [Mini] DisplayPort cable DIRECTLY into a ThunderBolt -1 or -2 connector and it will connect to the DisplayPort family subset of the ThunderBolt signals and work with no adapters needed. If your display requires [Full size] DisplayPort, you can buy a stunt cable that is just a re-wire of [Mini] DisplayPort to [Full size] DisplayPort. No conversion, so it should be really cheap.

USB-C ThunderBolt-3 is slightly more complicated, but not by a lot.
