Apple haven’t released a USB-C to Lightning interface-convertor. Nobody, other than Apple, will be aware of any intent to do so, if at all. Unfortunately, in this instance, interface conversion is more than just a physical plug.

At present, your available options are

1) to use headphones/earbuds with a USB-C connector (which will incorporate the necessary DAC).

2) ”standard” analogue headphones/earbuds with a 3.5mm plug - coupled to a USB-C adaptor (incorporating a DAC).

3) using a multi-way USB-C hub device.

Apple currently offer a proprietary solution for option 2, whilst for option 3 at least two third-party manufacturers have released custom hub devices for the new 2018 iPads. Other than that, AirPods are Apples targetted solution.

I suspect it is not simple. The lightning connector is not simply a fixed set of identified pins. The iOS device does some negotiating with the chip in the connector to configure the pins when it is plugged in. This is probably why simply connecting a Lightning device to the USB-C input doesn't work. It can connect power, but there is no logic to configure the signals. I'm guessing Apple would have to engineer an intelligent cable to properly map the signals between these two domains.

We should leave feedback asking for this.

That's a good answer. Thanks, I understand ...

I have no special recommendation there. You may be able to find an adapter at Amazon or an electronics store. But I suggest being certain the adapter is Apple certified. Consider looking for a male-to-female lightning adapter, then using the cable I mentioned above.

Yes, Apple does not offer USB-C EarPods at this time. But of course AirPods work with the new 11" iPad Pro.

I found this on Ebay:

3 PK Lightning to USB C Adapter Female to USB Type C Male 5 Gbp Data Sync Charge | eBay

I have no idea if this works well or not, but it seems like what we are looking for.

I just got a 12.9" iPP with the USB-C connector. I have nothing that uses USB-C. I can't connect to my MacBook. I did by a USB-A to USB-C cable from Monoprice. But now I have to carry that cable and the USB-C cable for charging. If I had a small adapter I could just use all my Lightning cables.

I'm looking for this as well. I'm very happy that Apple has gone with USB-C as all of my non-Apple devices use it.

With the USB-C on the new iPad Pro's this should be an Apple accessory. For many users, it will be about the convenience of carrying a single charger and cable for both their iPad and iPhone or any older iOS devices that require a lightning connector. I would be happy with either the USB-C Female to Lightning Male. And I want it as a dongle, not another cable.

I suppose that you mean a female to female lightning adapter: iPad Pro 2018 (usb c) to lightning (male) (using Apple cable), then lightning female female adapter, then lightning (male) ear pods.

The problem is that the only lightning female female adapter I found is the one using for charging the 1st gen Apple Pencil which doesn’t have the same lightning connections at both ends. One end (the one in which the Apple Pencil is to be connected) is «deeper» and no typical male lightning connector (such as the one in Apple EarPods) can click in)

So, I don’t know how a lightning earphone (there are a lot of them / some quite expansive) can be connected to the new 2018 iPads pro.

I have a similar problem. I have been using the Sennheiser clip Mike in conjunction with my iPhone x. The male output from the Mike connected to the female input only phone. I have just purchased the new iPad pro which has A USB C input and I now find that I can't use the microphone because there is no means of connecting it to the iPad. Apple do not provide anything and those little connectors that exist on Amazon do not apparently transmit audio. What do I do?

Dec 29, 2018 7:01 AM in response to Stuart Allen

I have this problem as well. I have a WiFi analyzer that uses a male lightning end to connect to the ipad or iPhone. My old apple air had no issue. New iphone Xs no issue. Ipad pro C Usb no dice. There are no converters from Female lightning to USB c that don't work.

I face this with three of my devices that used to work fine with lightning ports om iPad. iRig music pro, Console cable. All use male lightning to plug into female lightning ports.

Apple has nothing that will work.

All third party makers I have tried have not had success for me.

Does anyone have a solution yet?

I have the same problem with my Line 6 audio interfaces Sonic Port and Sonic Port Vx that works with a male lightning cable only, nd my new IPad Pro 11.

I have asked to Line 6 and they re in the middle of testing some solutions, but they said that there are after market adapters that probably works at customer’s risk (they don’t want suggest any brand).

Just a question, the old Apple Pencil has a female female adapter, do you know if the deeper side is identical to the other? I’m thinking to modify the lightning side of my line 6 cable to fit in it.

So far in my finding a solution I have not had much sucess. I suspect it maynot be possible. If it were I would think Apple would have come out with one. I tried the Apple pencil adapter, without sucess. It only supports charging not data. I tried those little Lightning to USB-C adapters, but they only support charging.

If anyone has a solution that works please post. For now I still have the iphone 10x max that works as its lightning anyway. Would have been nice if Apple or Belkin came out with one.

The Female to Female pencil adapter have not tried yet. Wish the iPad pro had both USB-C and Lightning inputs. What a bummer.

The Apple Pencil female female lighting adapter is deeper at one end and no normal male lightning jack can fit (only the Apple Pencil can fit which uses a longer lightning jack)

But even if it could fit, I suppose that, as all other third party adapters, it would not support audio transfer.

I think that there is no solution at the moment.

That's the conculsion I came to.

Not sure why Apple would not have a solution.

Maybe its not possible.

Maybe its too early for Apple, or some other company to figure it out.

In either case, those who use those devices that require it, are out in the cold for new iPad Pro.

I have to believe Apple must have considered it at some point.

Think of the money they could generate.

Someone should develop one.

At least the iphone still works with the devices.

Thanks for the link!

Hope leaving feed back there helps.

I really like the new iPad Pro, but I also would like to use all the devices that worked fine with the iPad Air and lightning port.

Console One: for switch console port sessions

iRig Multimedia Pro: for analog to digital recording with Garage Band and others

WyPry Pro: for detecting WiFi issues

Focusrite Scarlet: A/D converter

All still work with the iPhone X Max ok, and all still supported in iTunes.

However all those devices on the iPad Pro now no longer possible due to new USB-C

I guess we are a drop in the bucket for those who need it.

At the same time though, Apple (or another company) has a potential money maker

for sales of adapters.
