I see lots of instruction on creating a bootable Mojave installation drive on a USB stick but I want an emergency boot drive in case things go wrong.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

would suggest installing Carbon Copy Cloner or Superdupper ( both free to try ) and then Clone your SSD to external HD or whatever you choose. Just make sure the external drive is large enough to hold your entire internal SSD contents.

Get the fastest USB pen drive you can, probably 32GB or larger. Use Disk Utility to format it APFS with GUID partition map. Download the Mojave installer from the AppStore. Choose your pen drive as where you want to install Mojave.
What exactly are you trying to achieve with the USB Pendrive that the Carbon Copy Cloner external HD can not do? The CCC can be transported off site while away from Home / Work and be used to restore your internal HD / SSD if things go wrong.
If that is not what you want, you can create another Task in CCC to clone your computer to a Pendrive ( if the Pendrive is big enough to hold ALL your internal drives content).
How to create a bootable installer for macOS
I don't want to have to carry around entire drive with me. I just want a USB drive that can hang out in my briefcase with the various cables and stuff waiting to be able to boot up the Mac and perhaps assist in repairing it. I may as well upgrade my old TechTool Pro, which helps me create a boot disk on a stick and populate it with other repair/recover apps.
Thank you for your suggestion but I don’t want a bootable installer. I want a bootable version of Mojave on a stick drive so that if a crash of some sort takes out my system, I can bioit into the Mac Book Pro from the stick and have access to tools like Dizk Utility or other utilities to fix or work arounx the problem.
