Hello, jimfromniceville.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

It's my understanding that your phone app keeps blinking on and off during calls. I may be able to help you with this. Make sure that nothing is blocking your proximity sensor at the top like a case or screen protector. Then I would suggest a force restart, use this article as a reference on how to do so: If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won't turn on or is frozen
  • On an iPhone 8 or later: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Then press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.
  • On an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold both the Side and Volume Down buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
  • On an iPhone 6s and earlier, iPad, or iPod touch: Press and hold both the Home and the Top (or Side) buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
Then check for carrier updates: Update your carrier settings on your iPhone or iPad

Let us know what happens after these steps.

Cheers!

My phone is a 6 that I purchased at Walmart in August. I’m on Verizon Smart Talk plan. I don’t have a screen protector and it is in the original case that I purchased with the phone. The only thing that has changed is my upgrade to the new OS 12.1.

There are no carrier updates to install from Verizon.

The only way to break off a call is by the other party ending the call or by me having to force a hard restart. I got stuck in an automated voice menu that took several minutes for me to end because the screen kept blanking and I couldn’t select any thing from the keypad. I did a shutdown by pressing the home and wake up buttons simultaneously. I can’t check voicemails because I can’t enter my pin and #.
