a1278 wont boot new hdd

Gifted a a1278 macbook its been dropped right on the hdd corner so I replaced it with a Toshiba mq01abd050v advanced format out of a att dvr formatted it with a pc but i cant get past the ?file even tried High Sierra from usb but it just changed to a circle with a line through it. PleAse help!!

You have to install an operating system on the hard drive.


That Mac is old enough that the newest operating system it will run is OS X El Capitan.


Follow the instructions to do a recovery install located here:


How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery - Apple Support


When booted, you will likely need to use Disk Utility to create a new file system on which you can install El Capitan.
