I Can't Access Videos from my Camera's SD Card

I have been using a Lightening to SD Card Adapter for over a year to transfer photos and videos from my Sony DSC-HX90V camera to my iPad Pro 7,3 (IOS 12.1).

Recently I noticed that I can no longer access videos that are on my camera's SD card via the IOS Photos app. I can though still access my photos from that same card.

I did some troubleshooting and discovered the following.

The import function in the IOS 12.1 Photos app can't access files from any subfolders in the MP_ROOT folder on my camera's SD card.

When I take a video with my Sony camera, it stores this video on the SD card in a folder named 100ANV01 in the root folder MP_ROOT.

From this location the Photos app CAN'T access the video files in this subfolder. But if I manually move those video files to the root folder MP_ROOT, the Photos app CAN access this file and I can import it.

Has anyone else had this issue? Is there a solution?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

P.S. I did reformat my camera's SD card just to make sure this wasn’t an issue.

The thing is, Apple does what Apple does. Was it deliberate or a coding accident? We don’t know. And Apple is not known for fessing up with a mea culpa. If it’s a mistake it’ll mysteriously resolve itself in some future update. If it’s deliberate it never will.

You can send them feedback and let them know your thoughts on changing the feature

Product Feedback - Apple

I plugged in my camera card to the lightning SD reader and there was a short MP4 on there that the import function didn’t see. Which really just confirms what you are experiencing. The main difference is that my camera is a Canon and it sees subffolders, meaning the card is structured to have a DCIM folder then sub folders by month, then the photos/videos taken in that month. It sees the photos but not the video.

I had another card that had plain videos in a DCIM folder and it saw those, so seems to be a ‘video in a subfolder’ issue (as you noted)

after dealing with Apple for years my suggestion is...well find a work around either until it’s fixed or as a permanent way to get the functionality you want back. Let them know the issue via feedback, but it may be weeks/months/never before it’s fixed.
