Cursor jumps to end of email when deleting the character midsentence

Cursor jumps to end of email when deleting a character midsentence . When typing an email through Gmail on my iPhone with iOS 12.1 If I go to delete a character in the middle of the email the cursor deletes the character and then jumps to the end of the email. This is very frustrating.
