Help! Mac won't shut down on its own!

Hello. My Macbook Pro has an issue where it will NOT shut down on its own, and I have to force it to shutdown.

Here are some things I tried that DIDN'T WORK:

-Delete apps

-Wait it out

-Reinstall MacOS

The only thing I tried that DID work was booting up in Safe Mode, which led me to believe that the issue is caused by a user installed Application. This method is what worked for me when installing updates, as it relies on restarting the computer.

While researching, I came across this in the ASL (Apple System Log), which might clear up something, but I can't understand what exactly is causing the hogging.

This leads me to believe that the only solution is to format the Hard Drive. However, I don't want to go to this extreme because I feel like there is a solution hidden somewhere. If anyone can help, i'd greatly appreciate it!

Hi TheBlockisAwesome,

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities. I see that your Mac is not shutting down as expected.

To make sure I fully understand, what exactly happens when you try to shut down your Mac. The next best steps may vary depending on that, but there are some great steps you can try as a start.

The fact that the issue does not occur in safe mode suggests the issue is likely coming from a third-party login item. This may help If you think you have incompatible login items :

Login items are apps that open automatically when you start up or log in to your Mac. Occasionally, a login item may cause a blank blue screen at startup or other problems.

Important: To print these instructions, click the Share button User uploaded file in the Help window, then choose Print.

Test your login items

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.

  2. Click your account name below Current User, then click Login Items at the top of the window.

Make a list of the login items—you’ll need to remember them later.

  3. Select all of the login items, then click the Remove button User uploaded file.

  4. Choose Apple menu > Restart.

  5. If this solves the problem, open Users & Groups preferences again, add the login items one at a time, and restart your Mac after adding each one.

When the problem occurs again, follow the steps above to remove only the last login item you added.

To look at another possibility, if you're receiving an error about an app being open when you try to shut down, here's How to force an app to quit on your Mac :

How to force an app to quit

  1. Press these three keys together: Option, Command, and Esc (Escape). This is similar to pressing Control-Alt-Delete on a PC. Or choose Force Quit from the Apple () menu in the upper-left corner of your screen.
    User uploaded file
  2. Select the app in the Force Quit window, then click Force Quit.
    User uploaded file

If neither of the above seems to clear things up, you might also try a reset of your System Management Controller. This link will show you How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac .

Hopefully this helps to resolve your shutdown issue.

Kind regards.
