xcode 10.1 won't install on Mojave 10.14.1

I've got a MacBook Air with 10.14.1 Mojave. I've tried installing Xcode 10.1 a number of times and it always stalls at about the 95% done - never completes. I've tried stopping the install the usual way by clicking the square in the circle, but it won't stop this way. I've rebooted, removed the unfinished download from /Applications/Xcode, and restart the install - still no go. There's a ton of disk space available: 460gb free of a 500gb disk. Disk utility finds no issues with the media.

Any ideas out there I could try? I really need this and the command line tools to do some ansible work? Thanks!
