Bootable OS on USB drive

I need a bootable OSX on a USB drive, version 10.11.6 (my mac won't run anything newer). I can't use the Terminal command as it appears that there's no installer file in Applications to copy, and on the Applestore website there only appear to be updates, not the full OS.
