Page Numbering in section starts on right page.

Hello

I am writing a book.

On Pages I have checked these options:

Document:

Facing Pages, so the first page, which is the cover, is on the right

Headers & Footers:

Left and right pages are different

Match previous section

Page Numbering:

Continue from previous section

Section starts on Right Page

Now, I write chapter 1, the last page is page 8, on the left. I create a new section, page 9, on the right. So, everything is normal.

Chapter 2 ends in page 15, which is a page on the right. I create a new section, and automatically Pages starts it on the right, inserting a blank page on the left.

First of all, the blank page has not a page number, but it is not the worst. The thing that drives me crazy is that the first page of the chapter is numbered 16 and not 17. That thing is really stupid! Have someone ever reads a book with page 16 on the right?

Obviously I can create a new page on the end of the chapter, so the first of the new one will be 17, but it means if I make some change in the previous section, the blank page may become a right page, and the app would have create a new blank page in order to start the new chapter on the right, so I go back to the same issue. I would need to check every chapter anytime I will make a change in a previous section. For 15 pages, it is OK, for 500 pages and 60 or 70 chapters, that's suck.

So, is there a solution?

Thank you.

"But it would be so much better if it was an automatic function…" as it was in Pages '09.

The example below shows the bottoms of pages 12 and 13, with the blue leader of a section break at the end of the text on page 13, and the tops of pages 14 and 15. I've used Insert Page number in the header and footer boxes to ensure we have a visible confirmation of Pages behaviour on each of these four pages.

Pages has added a blank Page 14 (and has not inserted the page number in the header or footer of this page), plus Page 15. the first page of the new section, with its page number inserted in both header and footer (following the instructions given by the user (me).

Pages '09 is still available from Amazon.com and other resellers, so it coud provide you with a short term solution. I emphasize "short term" because Pages '09 has shown examples of not working at all in the current version (Mojave) of macOS, and will definitely fail in the next version, scheduled for release in 2019.

"So, is there a solution?"

Probably, but I suspect it requires a programming change.

If this is happening consistently, I'd suggest using the Provide Pages Feedback item in the Pages menu to send Apple a bug report.

In the meantime, I suspect your current solution is as good as it gets.

I would suggest ignoring the anomaly until you have the content in close to final form. At that stage, you can check and correct the state of pagination, using a Page break before the Section break wherever you need to insert an empty page to finish a section.

Barry
