Noise dampening on video recording

I recently recorded my son’s band playing at a music festival with my iPhone X’s Max. All of the videos sound great in the first 3 seconds and then the volume decreases and it sounds muffled like the microphone decided to noise cancel. I’m filming a concert, that’s the last thing I want. I don’t have one usable video from that day because the sound drop is so extreme it sounds awful.

Can this this feature be turned off? It seems like noise cancellation for video recording.

We appreciate the follow-up information. While testing without the case may be helpful in making sure there isn't anything covering the mic, it does sound like the best course of action is to submit feedback to Apple since there's not a setting to control this. You can do so here: Product Feedback

I have an Apple case and have not tried without it yet. It's only in high-volume situations, especially if the video starts quiet and gets loud - as soon as the drums kick in, the sound level on the video drops no matter how I listen to it. If I start filming in the middle of a loud part I don't get the extreme drop in volume. I recorded today and it happened again, but it wasn't as loud or windy so I didn't get the extreme volume drop--but I still got it.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. I understand you have an issue with audio quality on some recorded videos.

To double-check, if you record a new video for testing, how is the audio?

Do you have a case on your device? If you remove the case, how does the recording sound?

Does the audio issue on the recorded videos persist if you try listening on headphones?

Does this only seem to happen when recording in situations with high volume?

While there isn't a way to adjust recording/microphone settings on your iPhone, verifying the information above will help to rule out a few possible issues.
