iphone ios 12 text editing cursor placement

how can i move the cursor horizontally when editing text (iphone 8 plus ios 12.1)? currently the cursor position defaults to the end of the input text and i can only position the cursor within the visible text in the address bar; i cannot go back to the beginning of the input text. it appears this has been a problem since at least 2013. i hope there is a solution by now and i'm just missing it; very disappointing if still unaddressed.

iPhone 8 Plus, iOS 12.1

While editing, with one finger use 3D Touch on the spacebar (there's a haptic feedback as well as the letters on the keyboard are gone), you can go forward/backward with the finger like a touch pad.

Where are you attempting to edit text? Depending on what you are doing, if you tap into text, with 3D Touch, you can press down on the keyboard area of the screen, and turn that into something similar to a touchpad, which then allows you to move the cursor around to another location.

I'm not sure if this is what you are referring to, but knowing what area you are referring to would help.
