On-screen keyboard layout for iPad Pro 11”

I have an iPad Pro 11” running IOS 12.1 and annoyingly the global key for switching keyboards is on the far left whereas I would have expected to find the numeric/punctuation key on the far left.

This was an issue in 12.0 that was then subsequently fixed. And indeed on our other iPad Pro (9.7”) also running IOS 12.1 the numeric key is on the far left as i would expect.

A 45 minute call to Apple technical support went from “sure, i can help you fix this”; to “this should have been fixed with the recent software release”; to a reluctant “this is expected behaviour for this particular device”.

i find it hard to believe that apple would intentionally allow two similar devices running the same version of IOS to behave differently. Typing is done using touch and muscle memory and this inconsistency runs counter to that.

I’m hopefull that Apple will correct this, but in the meantime, anyone have a workaround besides removing alternate keyboards and hence forcing the globe key to disappear?

There is no one in ANY of these Apple Support Communities from any Apple product teams, here.

Cognizant or responsible Apple product teams, designers and engineers do not read, nor participate in these Apple technical support communities.

These are, largely, user to user Apple product support communities.

I and others, in these Apple product support communities, are simply Apple product users, just like you, that volunteer our own time and knowledge here.

Apple supplies these forums for users to work out their product issues with other users, but these community forums ARE monitored/moderated by Apple Staff, as well as Apple Community Support Specialists, assigned to these community forums.

The only way to get Apple to, DIRECTLY, listen to you is to use their feedback portion of their website.

iPad Feedback

http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

Cognizant Apple employees read ALL feedback generated from all of the various feedback pages and transfers the data to the and responsible Apple teams and personnel , but NO Apple employees will ever respond with any type of direct, individual replies from the feedback you post.

The more users that post product feedback about any product issue, the faster Apple is made aware and starts working on a fix/solution for a future software update.

Also, you may want to phone contact Apple, directly in Cupertino, California, and calmly talk to an Apple customer service employee about this issue via the link below.

I have the exact same situation and completely agree with the original question. How can two iPads running the exact same iOS (as up to date as possible, 12.1) behave differently? And yes, it’s very much about muscle memory and this is almost enough to be a deal breaker, because I DO need the globe/emoji key.

I use French and Spanish keyboards often enough to keep them easily accessible, so I don’t want to get rid of that key altogether, which apparently is an option with alternate third party keyboards. I just want the CHOICE to place the key where I am accustomed to having it—and where apple itself returned it on their 12.0.1 update. What does this switch have to do with this device in particular?

I just upgraded to the newest version of iOS and unfortunately this aweful UI/UX persists.

For now now disabling other keyboards on my newer iPad so that the globe key is removed.

Come on Apple. Get it together. You guys are supposed to be all about the user experience. How on earth does this inconsistency make any sense?
