Does iOS 12.1 contain the latest version of iTunes or is there something else I must do?

iTunes 12.1 contains the latest version of the iTunes Store app for that device.

My iPad is running ios 12.1, I don’t know what version the iTunes app is on it. Or, does the latest op system give you the latest iTunes app version?

If you have iOS 12.1 you have the current version of iTunes Store app, it doesn't have its own version number and is tied to the iOS version
