AFP Server and DNS

Question

AFP Server and DNS

Hi All,
I have just set up a new XServe as a file server. Our Open Directory Master was running AFP Directory Services and DNS.
I have now turned off AFP on the directory server, and connected the new XServe to this and started AFP.
All seems to be working fine, but on checking the system logs there is a load of stuff about servermgrd and no dns.
My question is, do i need to set up DNS on this server also?

Hi, do you test your DNS server?

go to terminal or go to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/es/mh359.html

Posting the actual log entries would be useful. I suspect the DNS ones are the standard one which gets reported every 20 mins (or 30?) if you do not have a dns.

No, but if you have a local dns in the other server it would be beneficial to set the System Prefs-> DNS Server to the other servers IP and then add an entry in that DNS for the afp server. The afp server will then be able to resolve its name and will not issue the dns errors.

Hi Felix,
Thanks for the reply. The server running DNS is fine, i had previously checked forward and reverse lookup and just did again and all is good. Just wondered if i needed DNS running on my file server. I suppose if users can log on fine and AFP is working ok i dont need to change anything, just that the error logs worried me a bit.

Thanks for that David.I have an entry in system preferences for the DNS server. Do i need to add the zone record for the AFP server under Zones or Secondary zones?excuse my ignorance on this matter.

I'm presuming you have a zone in which the directory master resolves its lan IP/hostname? Your afp server just has to added to that zone (as in 'machines' pane) - local IP and hostname.
