How can i update an iphone 4 from ios 7.1.2 to ios 8?

No, sorry.

Iphone 4 can't be updated beyond 7.1.2.

Iphone 4s can't be updated beyond 9.3.5.

Iphone 5 or 5c can't be updated beyond 10.3.3.

Newer models can be updated to current iOS version (now 12.1).

You can't. iOS 7.1.2 is the latest supported version for the iPhone 4.
