Why is my Apple ID password for my computer different than the one for my iphone?

Today, my iPhone wanted my Apple ID password. I've used it in the past. but today it told me my password was wrong. It isn't wrong. However, it is apparently different than my iMac. I thought they were the same across the board once it was changed. Since I don't know what password it is looking for, how do I change it?
