airpod microphone not working

My airpods worked for a while while on a phone call on my 6s, then stopped. They worked fine on my husband's 8. So I thought I needed to upgrade my phone, so I just bought the X and it still does not work on my new phone or with Siri. I have reset them, so I know that's not it. Is there a setting I need to check that I'm missing to get the mic to work?

AirPods, iOS 12.1, iphone XS Max

Bring the AirPod case next to your phone. Open it, and wait until the screen shows they are connected. Go to Settings>Bluetooth and you can see the AirPods. Tap on the ℹ next to the listing. That will open a group of settings. Check the Double-Tap settings, and also check the Microphone setting.
