Converting a .DAT file

So i tried to open some videos from my canon on my mac and one of the files ended in .DAT while the other files were all .MOV. I really don't know how to use this in iMovie because I've tried downloading converters and none of them seem to work. Any help would be appreciated.

Way to convert .dv files into .mov on Big Sur (or later) OS and retain quality? I have a huge number of archived .dv files imported from Digital8 tapes via an older version of iMovie. As .dv files are considered obsolete I need them in a different format, but I also want to maintain the original quality if at all possible. Due to size constraints converting them all to uncompressed SD format using Compressor isn't really feasible. As QuickTime does support DV format in .mov files I'm thinking converting to that format would retain the original quality (still in DV) but in a way that's still supported. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong and this would still require reencoding with associated quality loss.) Ancient posts on the Apple Communities indicate that the MPEG Streamclip program was capable of converting .dv files into .mov files, but that's a 32-bit legacy program that won't run on recent Mac OS versions. Are there other programs out there that can do the conversion? Compressor and QuickTime (at least current versions of them) don't. I do have an older Mac that I could install MPEG Streamclip on, but it would be much slower than my current machine. Does anyone here understand video formats and containers well enough to tell me if using MPEG Streamclip in this fashion would losslessly package up the DV format video in a .mov container or not? If it's going to be lossy anyway then I might as well use a more modern format instead. (BTW, the tapes were imported using iMovie as Digital8 camcorders apparently used an oddball audio sampling rate that Final Cut Pro couldn't handle; importing the video using FCP resulted in audio that moved out-of-sync in random ways that's difficult/impossible to fix. iMovie understood the sampling rate and so there were no audio sync issues.)

Importing .mov file into iMovie I have a .mov file created using iMovie in 2012 and would like to re-import it into the latest version of iMovie and edit it. I'm running macOS Monterey (v 12.3.1). I can import it, but cannot edit it.

Convert old MOV file for use in iMovie I guess there is a simple solution to this. I have a bunch of old video files from around 2004 - 2006 with an MPG tag. Info about the files is typically as contained in the attached screenshot. I would just like to import all these files into a video for a 21st birthday. Can the conversion be done on a mac, or do I have to download some kind of converter? Thanks! PS The heading of this post is wrong BTW (but I can't change it) - the file type is not MOV but MPG

Probably best to contact thr Canon support folks, as they will know their products best.

As for the DAT files, it appears that’s something some Canon cameras can occasionally generate.

VLC might open it, and there are some other potential options:

Given the number of hits I’m seeing for this web search, it seems that Canon cameras can produce a DAT file whenever the camera can’t complete the recording.
