iPhone Xs. Major HDR issue

Has anyone else noticed that if you take a photo on an iPhone Xs that uses HDR and then try to upload that picture to Instagram, Facebook or even to any on board photoediting app (Lightroom, Snapseed etc) that the photo no longer appears to have the dynamic range of the original photo. It is now flat and unremarkable.

The same thing happens when you take a screenahot using the iPhones native screen shot feature of any photo taken with HDR. The screen shoot is flat comapred to the original.

I am currently unable to get any HDR photo to display as HDR outside of the iphones native Photo app.

Is this happening for anyone else?

I am Unable to post screen shots, as the problem occurs when screen shots are taken.

I am using an iPhone Xs max.

A screen shot is going to be much lower resolution than what the original photo is going to be. I just did a quick test with my iPhone X and the original HDR photo took 7.4 MB and a screen shot of the same picture was 3.8 MB. Social media apps such as Instagram and Facebook automatically reduce the quality of the pictures to save space on their servers. I do know that Flickr will keep the original resolution and size but they recently just made changes to their platform where you can only save 1000 images for free. There will be other similar services out there. You may want to use one of those if you want to display your images in full resolution and size.

Yes that’s good reasoning and good advice, but if I may it feels like there is something else going on here as well.

And yes you are quite correct the original HDR here is 3.8MB. And The screen shot was 3MB.

But I’ve just seen on the Xs in preferences, there is a “View Full HDR” option that will “Automatically adjust the display to show the complete dynamic range of photos”

With this option turned off the non HDR version, the HDR version and the screen shot all look the same in the native Photos app.

With it turned on again, HDR photos almost animate the first time they are viewed - to brighten and become more crisp. You’ll notice a visible transformation in the first half second of viewing.

Whatever happens to the photo after this process doesn’t seem to be transferable or viewable outside of the native Photos app on the same phone.

I will say my previous phone was a X. And with the HDR effect on - and this screen - these photos are remarkable and like nothing I’ve ever seen on a smart phone before.

Yeah I thought so too, But, you will see what I’m talking about clearly if you take a screen shot of an HDR image from within the photos app and flip between the original image and the screenshot. They are both JPEG’s but the screen shot is flat and lifeless compared to the original

As far as I can see the - admittedly mind blowing - dynamic range this smartphone can display is only visible ‘on device’ within the native Photos app.

You’ll see the difference briefly clearly when you use the markup function too - although it saves again correctly but then can’t be exported off device as far as I can observe.

The on device photos from the Xs are truely draw dropping. It would be great to share them in their enitirity
