Dell U4919DW / MacBook pro 5k issue

Hi,

I have just purchased the Dell U4919DW monitor to use with my early 2018 MacBook Pro 13", but unfortunately I cannot choose full resolution 5120x1440 in the settings, max is 3840x1080. I have tried the app SwitchResX to manually set the 5k resolution without luck, only scaled.

From this link I read about my MacBook before purchasing the screen that:

"this model supports a maximum resolution up to 4096x2304 at 60 Hz at millions of colors on two external displays or a single external display at a maximum resolution up to 5120x2880 at 60 Hz at over a billion colors via Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)."

MacBook Pro "Core i5" 3.1 13" Touch/Mid-2017 Specs (Mid-2017 13" (Touch Bar), MPXV2LL/A*, MacBookPro14,2, A1706, 3163): …

My MacBook Pro has 4 USB-C ports, I'm using the left ones which operate at full speed (right ones are reduced).

Why can't I get full 5k resolution? Is it an issue with the MacBook, the connection, the screen or perhaps an iOS issue?

I think you should be using the DisplayPort input, based on this item under specs:

Scanning Frequency

DP1.4 : 5120x1440@60Hz (FRC)

HDMI2.0/USB-C : 3840x1080@60Hz (FRC) 2560x1440@60Hz (FRC)

To me, that says you only get the highest resolution over ONE input using DisplayPort 1.4 input.

Apple sells such a cable, rated for 5K

I am having the exact same issue as well - I am running a late 2016 13" MacBook Pro with the U4919DW. I initially tried USB-C, then after reading this thread just bought the Moshi USB-C to Displayport cable from the Apple Store - but am still getting the scaled 3840x1080 resolution as the maximum.

I have tried to play around with SwitchResX but cannot find a setting or a custom resolution that will make it work.

I did notice that if you go into the monitor menu and change the aspect ratio to 1:1, the clarity and resolution greatly improves, but it takes down the scale so the image only shows on about 75% of the monitor.

I called Dell Support but they directed me to Apple Support instead.

Very much looking forward to hearing what the senior advisor has to say!

Looks like Dell doesn't want anyone to know that there are compatibility issues with the Mac. Someone posted in the questions section of the U4919DW and said, "Would this monitor work with a 2018 MacBook Pro (13")? 2) Does anybody have specs for this monitor without the stand? Thanks for the feedback."

I responded, "It's not entirely clear at this point. According to both Dell and Apple, the monitor "should" work. However, there are several individuals who are finding that in practice, the monitor scales the resolution to 3840x1080. Hopefully a solution can be provided soon. See this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8641919"

Hi Everyone,

The problem is Mac Mini and Dell U4919DW didn’t like each other. When connect it with my iMac Pro, I have a 5K display plus a fantastic 5120x1440 extended display. The PBP solution is nothing compare to a single display especially you see the splits at the center of the display.

Connect it to my Mac Mini 2018 and MacBook Pro, I had the same problem like yours. I’ve tried different combination of certified Thunderbolt 3 cables and hubs (adaptors), still doesn’t work. Forget about HDMI or USB C cables since none of it can output 5K. Having said that, I’m not sure if the Dell 4919 could be classified as a 5K display since the V-resolution is only 1440.

Sadly, my iMac Pro is not a solution for me since putting the 2 displays side by side exceeding 6’. Working on it is counterproductive.

Forget about Apple or Dell’s support. They are useless and pointing at each other.

This is definitely unresolved. HELP!!!

In the thread that I referenced above, some people had success with 10.14.2 and some didn't. Granted, it's a different monitor, but it's an ultrawide. Based on the discussion I'm seeing elsewhere, it appears that Apple may be trying to resolve compatibility with ultrawides in 10.14.2. Does anyone know more about this? Does anyone know when the final build may be complete on 10.14.2?

@tjsalas78, have you tried all the different cable suggestions with 10.14.2 Beta? I'm wondering if a display port cable would do the trick with 10.14.2.

From the email, it sounds like they just read the thread and didn't investigate. I doubt we'll hear from Dell again on the issue.

The only hope now that I can see is that 10.14.2 fixes it. Perhaps if enough people reading this thread contact Apple, they may put in a fix before 10.14.2 is released (assuming it can be resolved that way).

Philips is releasing their 499P9H around February 2019 and it looks like it has mostly the same specs as the Dell. Wondering if that would work with the Mac. Pricing not available yet.

I received my scheduled callback today from my Senior Advisor. He submitted a ticket to Engineering, and their response was that the Mac doesn't support that resolution. He then looked up the specifications and discovered (as we all have already noted) that the MacBook supports an even higher resolution (5120 x 2880). He then reached back out to Engineering to inform them that they were incorrect, but he hasn't had a response yet. He is scheduling another callback for this Sunday.

I am wondering if the Mac is having trouble cutting the 2880 number in half. In other words, is it all or nothing with the 5120 x 2880? Perhaps it sees that it cannot do the "full 5K" and therefore scales it down to the next resolution.

If my theory is correct, that would mean that unless resolved, the Mac would never work with the other 32:9 5K monitors that are being released (I hope this isn't the case). Philips is releasing their 32:9 5K monitor soon. I've read that it should be released end of January or beginning of February. Model is 499P9H.

Has anyone had any USB-A trouble like I referenced in my earlier post? If so, I'd love to interact on that here.
