Dell U4919DW / MacBook pro 5k issue

Hi,

I have just purchased the Dell U4919DW monitor to use with my early 2018 MacBook Pro 13", but unfortunately I cannot choose full resolution 5120x1440 in the settings, max is 3840x1080. I have tried the app SwitchResX to manually set the 5k resolution without luck, only scaled.

From this link I read about my MacBook before purchasing the screen that:

"this model supports a maximum resolution up to 4096x2304 at 60 Hz at millions of colors on two external displays or a single external display at a maximum resolution up to 5120x2880 at 60 Hz at over a billion colors via Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)."

MacBook Pro "Core i5" 3.1 13" Touch/Mid-2017 Specs (Mid-2017 13" (Touch Bar), MPXV2LL/A*, MacBookPro14,2, A1706, 3163): …

My MacBook Pro has 4 USB-C ports, I'm using the left ones which operate at full speed (right ones are reduced).

Why can't I get full 5k resolution? Is it an issue with the MacBook, the connection, the screen or perhaps an iOS issue?

If you want to stay with your 13" MBP / Mac Mini 2018 - yes, it is.

And it is an Apple driver issue, not one of the Intel Graphics chipset - on the same machine it works flawlessly with Windows 10 with 5120 by 1440 oob.

I just received a moshi USB-C to DP cable. I tried it with my USB-C thunderbolt cable w/ my 2018 13" MBP and I could not get resolution 5120 x 1440. It did now show the resolution 2560x1440. It would only show 3840 x 1080 for both monitors. I'm not sure what I did wrong but I could not get that work.

I went half way there, but did not want to disable system integrity protection. What I can share is, there are no overrides for the LG 49BL95C-W or DisplayProductID 9e7b. Quite simply, this monitor is not supported in macOS 10.14.6 as we all know and just defaults.

Those with the Catalina Beta, check the path below and see if and DisplayProductID files end in "9e7b".

I wasted 2+ hours of my life with Apple "Support" and I use the term support lightly because they don't know anything. I emphatically told the "support" person I was talking to the only fix that the developers or engineers can provide is giving me a modification to a display overlay, so to make this monitor work.

Long story short and after an exhaustive exchange she said this was "expected behavior" because Apple only supports 5k resolution with dual displays. For the time being I'm using switchResX which, which makes the text look very blurry. I'd be willing to try the 2 cable route of someone would tell me how.

Apple support is garbage. Always has been always will be. People complain about Dell support but at least Dell makes working products. B/w this monitor and my laptop I've spent over $6k, which would get me an insanely high end system on the Dell / Windows end. Instead I'm dealing with non-functioning technology and Apple is to blame.

The thing that is really absurd is that they do not even acknowledge this issue. Call Apple support and ask for support with this and they will have no idea what you're talking about despite all the posts to their forums about this very issue.

They should say, go away we're not gonna help you, but they should at least acknowledge the problem.

I have to admit, I'm pretty happy with the solution of running the monitor as two virtual 27 "monitors, and the PbP mode gives you the ability to flip an app to full screen on the left or right side of the monitor. It does not take up the entire width of the screen, but only half the width, as it used to when I had two monitors, and if I really need the full width for an Excel spreadsheet (whenever), then I can manually enlarge the window to the whole width.

Even if Apple should fix the error, I will probably not change my setup. Ok, it took me two TB3 ports instead of one, but I had the full 5120x1440 resolution available from the first day.

Mine is a Mac Mini 2018. I remember it took a few trials until it worked for me. I also used SwitchResX, but it seemed more like a problem of acknowledgement - after a while, SwitchResX displayed the 2560x1440 as one of the "native resolutions". Since that time, I can switch on or off the PbP feature, and 2560x1440 comes back automatically.

Please keep in mind that you also have to switch of the "multiple spaces" feature in Mission Control to display windows over both virtual monitors. Otherwise windows will be cut off left or right when they cross the middle of the screen.

I'm sorry when you say, 'you also have to switch of [sic] the "multiple spaces" feature in Mission control', do you mean uncheck the box for "Displays have separate Spaces", or are you talking about the Dashboard drop down?

Can anyone confirm this for me?

I'm looking at purchasing a MacBook Pro that will be compatible with the U4919DW monitor. I want it to work properly without any "workarounds." Full resolution out of the box. My understanding from this thread is that it must be a dedicated graphics card instead of the integrated one.

I talked to Apple sales today and I was told that ALL 13" MBPs (without exception) have integrated cards. And that ALL 15" MBPs (without exception) have dedicated cards. I was also told that you cannot customize a 13" to have a dedicated card.

Is this correct?
