Dell U4919DW / MacBook pro 5k issue

Hi,

I have just purchased the Dell U4919DW monitor to use with my early 2018 MacBook Pro 13", but unfortunately I cannot choose full resolution 5120x1440 in the settings, max is 3840x1080. I have tried the app SwitchResX to manually set the 5k resolution without luck, only scaled.

From this link I read about my MacBook before purchasing the screen that:

"this model supports a maximum resolution up to 4096x2304 at 60 Hz at millions of colors on two external displays or a single external display at a maximum resolution up to 5120x2880 at 60 Hz at over a billion colors via Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)."

MacBook Pro "Core i5" 3.1 13" Touch/Mid-2017 Specs (Mid-2017 13" (Touch Bar), MPXV2LL/A*, MacBookPro14,2, A1706, 3163): …

My MacBook Pro has 4 USB-C ports, I'm using the left ones which operate at full speed (right ones are reduced).

Why can't I get full 5k resolution? Is it an issue with the MacBook, the connection, the screen or perhaps an iOS issue?

I think you should be using the DisplayPort input, based on this item under specs:

Scanning Frequency

DP1.4 : 5120x1440@60Hz (FRC)

HDMI2.0/USB-C : 3840x1080@60Hz (FRC) 2560x1440@60Hz (FRC)

To me, that says you only get the highest resolution over ONE input using DisplayPort 1.4 input.

Apple sells such a cable, rated for 5K

This thread is surreal. I cannot believe apple cannot get their stuff together. By their own documentation this monitor should be supported. I have an eGPU which works perfectly fine at the correct resolution, but on reboots i need to open my mac up to unlock it and disconnecting the eGPU crashes the machine sometimes. Anyone else having issues with eGPU?

I got my dell U4919DW in last week and the setup works perfectly with my 2018 MBP 15”. I even use it with a hedge dock for quicker plug and play. Make no difference to the dell monitor if you use it with the dock or without. I used the usb-c cable that came with it and if you plug a speaker into the usb of the monitor you get audio.

Also interesting to note is I tried to plug my apple tv 4k into the hdmi port and it worked but was too wide to be usable. Will continue to explore this out.

This id the dock I got from henge docks

A little off topic but hopefully someone here might be able to help given the circumstances, failing that maybe someone can confirm if I'm going mad or if I need to speak to support. I've got my U4919DW plugged into a Mac Mini 2018. I have endless issues in relation to sleep and wake up. I have to restart the Mini a couple of times a week because it won't wake and the monitor never goes to sleep properly no matter what I do. when the Mini sleeps I get the message shown below, the display never sleeps properly. I've changed numerous settings to no avail. As for the wake up I've tried USB connected keyboards, mice, unplugging peripherals, nothing wakes it.

Is anyone else having similar problems? I've got a USB-C cable to the monitor as well an a HDMI cable and I'm using the monitor in PBP mode.

Hi Brumsterino,

I have the exact same setup as you do (Mac Mini 2018 + Dell U4919DW) and experienced the same problem as you do. To fix it, I set the "Turn Display off after" item to 3 hours to essentially disable this, and then setup a "Put display to sleep" hot corner in Mission Control / Hotcorners.

What this lets me do is put the display to sleep when I walk away from the computer, and wake it up again as soon as I get back.

For some reason, if the Mac Goes to sleep first, waking it up is hard. But if the monitor sleeps first, waking everything back up works perfectly.

I think this is a bug in the OS somewhere, but I'm no expert. And it may be related to the other main issue with this Mac & Monitor combo of being forced to use expanded desktop.

Overall, both of these issues are super, super minor to me compared to the incredible usability and productivity from this setup. I would definitely buy it again.

Good luck!

@Mark, that's an awesome response and makes perfect sense to what I'm seeing. Thanks for taking the time to respond! I'll do that now.

Does your Dell monitor sleep correctly when you do this? Mine displays that awful Dell message and never seems to enter power saving mode?

Last one before I let the thread get back to its intended purpose (you're right these are minor issues for the experience we're getting), have you had any issues with Bluetooth reliability? I'm aware it's being reported a number of forums, just curious to know if you've seen periodic drop outs of peripherals?

Thanks again!

Hi again,

My Bluetooth keyboard, mouse and trackpad all work well. My mouse seems to lose the connection once in a while but its rare, and reconnects right away.

One problem I do have with bluetooth is finding a really good Bluetooth headset. My old headset, a Pantronics Legend, was always noisy connecting to my old macs, iPhone and new Mac Mini. Times when it would actually worked, my Mac kept switching it to be the default audio device for music, which I did not want. I threw it out last week. I'll open another thread about this actually.

Bit of an update for everyone,

Bought the Moshi USB-C to DP cable (which apparently supports 5k). Didn't do anything.

Downloaded the SwitchResX app and instantly without any issues 5k resolution (without scaling) was available 5120 x 1440.

Applied the settings and presto. Issue is fixed. No PDP mode required. Working with the supplied usbc to usbc cable

*This is for the Philips 499P9H1_75 Brilliance (49" ultrawide)

It would seem that apple just need to enable this resolution in their code. Paid for and registered SwitchResX and will use this until Apple gets this fixed. Yeeeeeey

Hi Apexkingjusto,

I just buy the Philips 499P9H, and the new MBP 15" 2018, to work at home. For me it was the perfect combination.

The dock fonction (ethernet, webcam, usb) on the screen work perfectly with the usb-c. But I have the same problem with the resolution who stay in 3840*1080 instead of 5120*1440.

I hope that Apple fix this problem with the next update 10.14.4....

Are you sure that it is an upscaled version? It looks quite good on my screen. I tested the PBP as well but I didn't see any 16:9 resolution as a dropdown option in the system preferences. When choosing 2560x1440 in SwitchResX, which is the only possibility, the image looks almost identical to the (upscaled) version of 5120x1440.

When I choose a lower resolution than 5120x1440 in SwitchResX or system preferences my monitor warns me that I'm using a low resolution. There is no warning when choosing 5120x1440 from SwitchResX.
