Dell U4919DW / MacBook pro 5k issue

Hi,

I have just purchased the Dell U4919DW monitor to use with my early 2018 MacBook Pro 13", but unfortunately I cannot choose full resolution 5120x1440 in the settings, max is 3840x1080. I have tried the app SwitchResX to manually set the 5k resolution without luck, only scaled.

From this link I read about my MacBook before purchasing the screen that:

"this model supports a maximum resolution up to 4096x2304 at 60 Hz at millions of colors on two external displays or a single external display at a maximum resolution up to 5120x2880 at 60 Hz at over a billion colors via Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)."

MacBook Pro "Core i5" 3.1 13" Touch/Mid-2017 Specs (Mid-2017 13" (Touch Bar), MPXV2LL/A*, MacBookPro14,2, A1706, 3163): …

My MacBook Pro has 4 USB-C ports, I'm using the left ones which operate at full speed (right ones are reduced).

Why can't I get full 5k resolution? Is it an issue with the MacBook, the connection, the screen or perhaps an iOS issue?

I update my MacBook Pro 15" with Catalina and now I can choose 5120*1440 in the setting. Before, I used ResXtreme but now it's like working without the app.
But there is not a difference in quality between before with the application ResXstrem and now via the native settings.

I think it's probably using a scaled version of the resolution. Which is just horrible. Hopefully someone from Apple might just read this forum and do something about this, but I'm not holding my breath. It will probably be a while before any of this stuff is addressed if at all

I have been struggling to get the U4919DW to run at 5120x1440 for about a week now and the best solution would be to purchase an eGPU enclosure, GFX Card and possibly a PSU. Currently, using one Thunderbolt 3 connection to my 13" 2019 MacBook Pro I was able to achieve this result using the equipment as follows:

a. OWC Mercury Helios FX eGPU Enclosure ($300)
b. XFX AMD Radeon RX 580 Graphics Card. ($179)
c. Corsair CX650M Modular PSU (Although might not be necessary) ($80)
d. Apple Thunderbolt 3 Cable (Host - eGPU) ($60)
e. DIsplayPort Cable included with U4919DW (eGPU - U4919DW)

When I initially connected the eGPU to the Host, the entire system shutdown and subsequently went into an infinite boot -reboot crash cycle. To resolve, I completely reformatted the BootDrive to factory conditions including any partitions or APFS containers I had created to "start fresh".

Once MacOS 10.14.6 was installed, I connected the Thunderbolt 3 cable from the eGPU to the left hand side of my MacBook Pro and the display woke up and to my relief in all its 5k glory.

It's only a $600 work around and I needed an eGPU anyways because they are awesome, but it is the only solution so far that works for me, and I've tried everything - including every suggestion posted in the forum.

The dual display trick is ratchet to be clear to anyone who endorses it.

I don't endorse the PbP solution, but I use it. It seems more reasonable to buy a second cable than to buy an $800 eGPU, on top of having spent over $3k for my 13" MBP, and $1.5k for this monitor.

It's insulting to have to buy an eGPU when you know the issue is only a matter of Apple / someone creating a display overlay for MacOS. And from I've read the eGPU solution doesn't work with Catalina.

I upgraded my Macbook Pro 15'' 2019 to Catalina too, and I am NOT able to see any difference when choosing 5120*1440 between the app SwitchResx and the native settings. However, when I clicked the Apple icon of the laptop attempting to see

the display info., it shows me that the resolution is still 3840*1440. My external monitor is LG 49 inches supporting 5120*1440 though.

Apologies for the double post -- turns out it was not displaying at 5120x1440 with the lid closed, but was actually 3840x1080 and scaled (according to the About this mac -> displays).

Ended up purchasing an 8k USB-C to DisplayPort 1.4 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07R3ZQBS6) today.

It shows higher resolutions in the 'Scaled' menu (up to 7680x2160), but all tagged with 'low resolution'.

5120x1440 (low resolution) setting seems to set it to 3840x1080 and scaled up (according to About this mac -> displays) -- this seems to also be the 'Default for display' setting.

Tried clamshell open and closed.

I'm thinking the Macbook Pro 2018 just can't do it.

The sad news is: it can do - but only with WIndows 10 and Bootcamp. It is just a matter of the graphics driver. With macOS, we are still stuck with the Picture-by-Picture mode and two virtual displays with 2560x1440 as a workaround.

I'm pretty sure this could be fixed if Apple wanted to. There is probably not enough demand for their Devs to take action.

Those numbers show you are achieving 5120 by1440. In your case, your tiny text will also be showing at a " looks like" 5120 by 1440, and may be nearly illegible.

If you adjust the numbers in "scaled", it should show different numbers for text "looks like" but the overall resolution (used directly for graphics) should continue to be the very high 5120 by 1440.

Grant, you are wrong. In fyan's case, a 5120x1440 resolution is shrinked on 3840x1080 by the OS, and then again it is zoomed to 5120x1440 by the monitor. This looks horrible. You may compare it to a FullHD movie scaled down to SD and then shown on a HD TV.

As far as I know, the only way to get the combination "Intel UHD 630 - MacOS - 49" display with 5120x1440" is using the Picture-by-Picture mode. I can not stress clearly enough that everything works out of one piece, if the operating system is called "Windows".

I bought the LG version of this panel last week and I'm also having the same issue - my 2018 MBP (with Radeon Pro Vega 20 4Gb card), will not recognise the display at 5120x1440. The only solution is to run two monitors side by side which is not ideal but I can live with it for now. I really wise Apple would fix this as it seems to be a problem that was reported some time ago (over a year ago) and it still has not been addressed.

I noticed today in macOS Catalina 10.15.2 there is a new override file at

/System/Library/Displays/Contents/Resources/Overrides/DisplayVendorID-1e6d/DisplayProductID-9e7b

It contains a single element "DisplayPixelDimensions" set to 5120x1440.

Is this for the LG 49BL95C-W display?

Does it fix the problem?

Will a similar override for the other similar displays fix those displays?

To know for sure what resolution and frequency a display is set to, you must check the onscreen menu of the display. If it doesn't have all the information then you can use SwitchResX to view the timing information of the current resolution be double clicking the current resolution in the Current Resolutions list.

To know how your display is connected to the computer (DisplayPort speed and lanes) and to get the unaltered EDID (which SwitchResX does not show) or the EDID of both DisplayPort connections of a dual link SST display (like the LG UltraFine 5K), then use the following command:

/System/Library/Extensions/AppleGraphicsControl.kext/Contents/MacOS/AGDCDiagnose -a > AGDCDiagnose_a.txt 2>&1

Each connection might have a different EDID, so you might want to do it for all the ports of a display.

Hi,

I've run this update on my 2018 MBP, and it now fully supports my LG 49BL95 at 5120x1440! I've previously had to run the monitor in PIP mode as two monitors. If you go to the System Preferences > Displays and Option Click on the scaled resolutions, 5120x1440 is there and it works a treat.

Thank you Apple (at last)!
