Will an HDMI-to-DVI cable work with HDMI 2.0?

I see that the 2018 Mac Mini comes with an HDMI 2.0 port. The technical specs Mac mini - Technical Specifications - Apple read that HDMI and DVI are supported with an adapter. Does that mean an HDMI-to-DVI adapter won't work? I don't see an HDMI-2.0-to-DVI adapter (or even an HDMI-2.0-to-HDMI adapter) in the Apple Store.

Mac mini, macOS High Sierra (10.13.5), 16 GB RAM

Hi there, Charles B. Maybe I can help you. Yes, it should work. Of course, I haven't seen anything with DVI for a long time. But if you do have something that has a DVI port on it, okay. You'll need an adapter that has both HDMI 2.0 and Dual Link DVI on the other end. About the only differences between HDMI 1.4 and HDMI 2 are-increased resolution (1080 vs 4k, or so) and HDCP 2.2 which the adapter and the Mac mini must support, otherwise you won't get any picture at all. You can't mix stuff that supports HDMI 1.4 only and HDMI 2.0, ("Hi speed HDMI" ) especially with HDCP 2.2. It all has to support HDCP 2.2, all of it, or no picture. Of course this is video only, you'll have to find another way to get sound to where you need it, if you do need it. I have provided a link for illustration. There may be a cable out there that does this, but I couldn't find one with a dual link dvi, just single link. there may be one out there, but I couldn't find it. There are also displayport to dvi adapters out there as well.. if that helps

It's a quite old monitor, at least 12 years old, although it still works (knock silicon). The adapter I have is dual-link, but the monitor cable itself is single link and the monitor doesn't support HDCP.

That said, Connect to HDMI from your Mac - Apple Support seems to imply that I only need HDCP for playing back iTunes encrypted or Fair Use content, but not for day-to-day content. Please clarify.

Yup..you're right. I had a look at your post and a good think on it. For day-to-day content, single link should be OK. An older version of HDCP should be OK as well. Skip all the stuff i mentioned about 4k and HDCP 2.2 because that doesn't apply here. Your monitor doesn't support it. You can also go the USB-C to single link DVI route if you'd like or stick with HDMI to DVI. It's up to you. Apple sells an HDMI to single link dvi for $29.00, dunno what the price is on the usb-c to single link dvi cable...I think monoprice has one for $17

well, I'm done
