I recently purchased an iPhone 8 and it came with earbuds with a lightning connector. I plugged the earbuds into my phone and could get no sound from them and sound continued to come from the speakers. I tried the On/Off and volume controls on the wire to one of the earbuds, but it made no difference. What do i need to do to make the earbuds work?

Thank you for your response. I discovered that the earbuds will not turn off the speakers if you plug them in after starting music from the speakers. If I plug in the earbuds before starting music, everything works.

Check the Lightning port with a flashlight and a toothpick and clean as necessary. If this doesn't work get Apple to replace the EarPods.
It is "recently purchased". Doesn't take long for lint to build up.
Thank you for your response. I will test my iPhone with a known good set of EarPods and if that works I will then test my EarPods on my son's iPhone8 to see if they pass/fail that test.
I was concerned that I have not set up my new phone correctly to use the EarPods with it.
