Help with OS X El Capitan install

my sister gave me her MacBook Pro

i am following the steps to reinstall OS X , but it keeps saying not available. So I noticed I’m installing Macintosh HD “749.3 GB total “

snd underneath it says “ 748.67 GB available “

Maldonado next to it is recovery HD - which is unavailable - “ this disk is locked”

Not sure how to move forward with this ? If I don’t have enough space for the install how do I free up space my sister said she deleted everything and I shouldnt have a problem with space - but I don’t know what to do know / I desperately need this computer for school and nothing I try seems to be working. I’m able to get on safari but that’s it . Please help!

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

sometimes the disk is locked because it needs to be repaired first. Run Disk Utility, choose the drive and "Repair Disk". Run repeatedly until it comes clean or is hopeless.

not available

that means, not available to the Apple-ID you are currently using. ElCapitan is not available to most users "as new".

try the methods laid out in this article, such as re-installing the original "shipped in the box" version of MacOS. Once you have ANY version of MacOS running, things get much easier.
