Carbon Copy Cloner - password authenticate question

Last night I successfully backed up my int. HD to my ext. HD using this software. During the process, I would get prompted for my user ID and password before CCC could proceed to the next cloning item.

If I were to schedule CCC to clone automatically, is there a way to override it requesting my password? If not, does that mean I have to babysit it every time? If so, sort of defeats the purpose of automatic backup, right?

It appears that you entered your password by unlocking the lock immediately after launching CCC. Since the password is only active for 5 minutes (accept when an application requiring it is running), you probably spent more time than that to set up your backup. Thus, when you started cloning, you were outside that window, and subsequent instructions were treated as new commands. The way to avoid that is to set up what you want to do, unlock the lock, and immediately hit the clone button.

BTW, this topic's amply covered at the Bombich forums. Post any remaining queries to http://forums.bombich.com/viewforum.php?f=3 and take a moment to read the postings and stickies in the Tips forum.

Just the other day after using CCC for a very long time did I encounter continuous requests for a password. I have never had this happen and it does not happen during scheduled backups.

What Baltwo explains of the 5 minute rule on the password, I have never encountered. As I said, it wasn't until the other day that I was asked for a password after I unlocked the lock. And many times I have unlocked CCC and left it for more than 5 minutes, came back to it and never had a request for a password after the initial "unlocking". This is new to me, as of last week after a very long time of use. I have also been experiencing this kind of strangeness since the last couple of updates, 10.4.5-8, with other applications and system resources too.

I live on CCC and will watch this activity very closely from now on and will even attempt to duplicate this situation.

The 5 minute period is not determined or controlled by CCC, but by the Unix command "sudo" which CCC uses. Open a Terminal window, type man sudo, hit <return>, and read all about it. (Tap the spacebar to move on a page).

After authenticating with the padlock there is no panic - you have 5 minutes, but not longer. Once cloning starts there is continuous activity, which keeps sudo "alive"; what causes these glitches is a 5 minute period of inactivity. Oh, and it's not CCC that keeps asking for the password – it's the operating system: you might notice a different style of authentication panel to the one that CCC put up. Best, though, is not to encourage it to happen! :=)

BTW, in the link that Baltwo gave there are some 'Stickies' which are important for all CCC users. Start with "Journaling, Zeroing, etc".

Me too and just recently. I am logged in as root and admin.

I tried to play with it today and another strange thing happened. My Backup volume appears in the Source button, but not the Destination. This with the password thing is new after using CCC for a very long time and never encountering this before.

ALSO, my scheduled backups are working, but not firing off when scheduled. But are firing off. So . . .

I think somethings up with the OS?! I'm having all kinds of weirdness that is not happening when I boot to 10.4.4 and earlier. These same types of things started happened in the Panther to Tiger pre-release days. I had AppleCare then and was actually told by a rep that if I am having so many problems with Panther I should look forward to switching to Tiger and that the problems that I was having he could not help with, but the new OS would fix them. Hmmmm.

"My Backup volume appears in the Source button, but not the Destination"

The most likely reason for that is something amiss with the formatting – CCC is telling you that it can read from that volume but not write to it. Follow the steps in Journaling, Zeroing, Partitioning & OS 9 driver. You could test that it boots your Mac by using your Install CD to put a system on it. If you need further help post in 'CCC Troubleshooting'.
