Garage band doesn't find music interface

are you perhaps running an older OS on the MBP, and the latest on the MBA?

there are new security settings in the latest OS to prevent apps from secretly using input devices; open the Security & Privacy settings in System Prefs and make sure that GB has permission to use your interface.

here's an example screen shot from another user showing permission being given to the internal mic:

you need to give the interface permission, the mic picture was just an example

hmmm, a little more investigating, and some of the major interface makers seem to say that you only need to give permission to the mic.

unfortunately, we're in the middle of some big projects, so can't upgrade to OS 10.14 to test this firsthand

what do you see if you open

System Prefs->Sound->Input

do you see your interface listed? can you select it and see indication of input in the prefs window?

what is the make/model of your interface?
