Apple still makes and sells the 6th generation iPod Touch, so its not entirely abandoned and is also much cheaper than an iPhone.

Beyond that its up to you. You can use iPhones without cell service if you want to and they'll be pretty much an iPod.

Yes, it appears so. Apple has decided not to make simple music machines, and they abandoned the iPod Touch in favor of a lower-cost iPhone. This is the direction of the rest of the world, we are told.
If you remove the SIM in an iPhone then it can be used like the iPod Touch. It can run some apps as well as providing a music player. You can use Restrictions to further limit what your children can do.
Well....they’re not on Apple’s home page, not listed on the support page and there hasnt’ been a new model for a few years now.
I have no authority to say they are obsolete and Apple has not officially ended the line. That said, they are very much persona non grata on Apple’s site.
Perhaps you could look into used phones where there is no pressure to add them to.a cellular plan but everything else should work just fine on them.
I’ve recently purchased a Gen 7 touch (I think) refurbished and it’s awesome. Not only do you get all the features but it’s much less expensive + you can get Apple Care + for 2 years if you have reservations about purchasing used.

You probably bought a gen 6 ipod, because a gen 7 has never been released. And yeah, they are good devices. I Have one myself.
THe only downside is, like every other generation of the ipods, it has horrible battery life. Easily solved with an external battery and having a charger at work.
