Are ipods obsolete?

I don't want to buy my boys phones yet. Are ipods obsolete?

Apple still makes and sells the 6th generation iPod Touch, so its not entirely abandoned and is also much cheaper than an iPhone.

Beyond that its up to you. You can use iPhones without cell service if you want to and they'll be pretty much an iPod.

Yes, it appears so. Apple has decided not to make simple music machines, and they abandoned the iPod Touch in favor of a lower-cost iPhone. This is the direction of the rest of the world, we are told.


If you remove the SIM in an iPhone then it can be used like the iPod Touch. It can run some apps as well as providing a music player. You can use Restrictions to further limit what your children can do.

Well....they’re not on Apple’s home page, not listed on the support page and there hasnt’ been a new model for a few years now.


I have no authority to say they are obsolete and Apple has not officially ended the line. That said, they are very much persona non grata on Apple’s site.


Perhaps you could look into used phones where there is no pressure to add them to.a cellular plan but everything else should work just fine on them.
