MacBook Restart itself - Sleep Wake Failure

It happened second time

Crazy thing - it is happened second time before 9am

All I hear is TWO (quick one after another) times "bong" / hime sound which is unusual.

MacBook lis is closed all the times while that sleep durning the night.

I've done obvious things like SMC and NVRAM resets.

I got latest Mojave 10.14.1

Hello the_bart123,

I understand that you are having an issue with your Mac restarting. I use my Mac a lot and know how important it is to have your device running smoothly. I'm here to help.

Here is a resource that can assist you:

If your Mac spontaneously restarts or displays a message that it restarted or shut down because of a problem

Please let me know if you are still having issues after reviewing the link.

Have a great day!

I'm chiming in because I have the same issue, and am also using a CalDigit product (Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock, HDMI version). I have two monitors connected via HDMI, both are not at 4k but 1920x1080, both are different brands (Asus & BenQ, 24"). It crashes unexpectedly whenever I am not there (so it has to do with sleeping/napping) and I get this error message in the logs:

Stackshot Reason: Sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds while entering darkwake on way to sleep. Suspected bundle: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily. Thread 0x74.

I'll try some of the fixes mentioned above (disabling power nap, that Amphetamine thing, etc.). I find it interesting that we're all using CalDigit products (I think)?

I have some test results to share:

Initial Setup:

  • 15-inch 2017 MacBook Pro (3.1 GHz Core i7, 16GB RAM, Radeon Pro 560, Intel HD 630, 1TB storage)
    • CalDigit TS3 Plus (with the supplied certified Thunderbolt 3 cable, of course)
      • USB wired keyboard
      • USB wired mouse
      • USB webcam
      • 4k display via DisplayPort cable
      • 4k display via the second Thunderbolt 3 port using a USB_C-to-HDMI cable

Tests Run with above configuration (in all cases I left the computer without shutting down or manually sleeping it for over an hour):

  1. Both monitors connected
    1. System shut down issue reported by OP
  2. TS3 Plus disconnected (so laptop on its own, not even connected to power)
    1. No problems
  3. TS3 Plus disconnected (this time connected to power)
    1. No problems
  4. TS3 Plus connected with DP-connected display only
    1. No problems
  5. TS3 Plus connected with USB_C-to-HDMI-connected display only
    1. No problems

It would seem that my MBP is having a hard time running two 4k displays.

I ran all of the above tests with the Plugable TBT3-UDV Thunderbolt 3 Dock with the same exact results.

Finally, I ran all of the above applicable tests with both docks connected to the MBP each connected to a single 4k display with a DP cable; again, with the same exact results.

Apple support has also asked me to try the following three things:

  1. Reboot in safe mode and see if the problem persists in safe mode
  2. See if the problem persists when logged in as a different user (to rule-out issues with user settings)
  3. Reboot in recovery mode and run disk utility

Item 1 wound up "disconnecting" one of my two external displays from the start (in other words one display worked the other was off and unresponsive) and as such, I did not experience the problem outlined by the OP. This is no surprise to me considering the test results posted above.

Completing item 3 wound up reporting no issues with my disk.

I'll try item 2 this afternoon and report back.

Take 4; Action!

Hi, All

Here's a break down of the past few weeks of working with Apple Support:

  1. My issue is escalated to engineering.
  2. Engineering says my dock doesn't support two 4k displays
  3. I say that's incorrect (see the links to the products in one of my earlier posts); plus, see all of my test scenarios which include test results that show the issue exists even when I've got one monitor hooked up to each docking station and each docking station plugged into my MBP
  4. Engineering: nothing
  5. I send a follow up email several weeks later
  6. Engineering says, "...there is nothing more we can do beyond recommending different adapters and making sure to use the adapters in these ports: one in the back left and one in the back right ports of the MacBook Pro."

As frustrating of a response as that is, it did occur to me that I have yet to test with the two monitors directly connected to the MBP. Thankfully, I've already got the necessary cables to do the job and am using that configuration right now.

As always, I'll report back with my findings and any response I receive from Apple Support once I report my findings to them.

Jan 15, 2019 9:38 PM in response to JJDrummer

Disabling Power Nap did not fix the issue. I came back to my Mac and tried to wake it up, but this time it did not crash. Instead, my monitors turned on, but both displayed a blank screen. It's interesting though - the monitor connected with USB-C to Display Port went into an endless cycle of NO SIGNAL--POWER OFF--POWER ON--NO SIGNAL, but the monitor connected directly through Display Port remained on the whole time, albeit with a blank screen.

My Mac was in clamshell mode, as it always is when connected to my dock, and when I opened it it was completely unresponsive. The display was blank and the Touch Bar was stuck on the 'Display Connected' screen, which I've pictured below. The Touch Bar wouldn't even respond to touch.

This seems to be a bigger issue than I thought...

Dec 7, 2018 9:49 PM in response to the_bart123

I'm getting the same message with my 2017 15-inch MacBook Pro.

I started noticing it after I upgraded from 2 1080P displays to 2 4k displays. I was on Mojave 10.14.1 when it started, updating to 10.14.2 did not fix it.

Basically, if I walk away from my machine for 20-30 minutes it'll go to sleep but will be fine when I come back. But, when I've been gone for an hour or so, without fail, my machine will have rebooted with this error message.

Please help, this is my workhorse.

Thanks!

I'm reporting back on my test of this issue with a new user account on my MBP (to be annoyingly clear, I'm talking about item 2 from my post at 9:33 AM Pacific today) I only "ran" the test that I care about, namely both 4k displays connected and the machine did reboot on its own.

I happened to be in the room when it happened, and leading into the reboot my external displays turned back on as if the computer was going to wake, but stayed in a lit, but black screen. However it looked like my mouse was jumping all around the lower-left quadrant of one of the displays. After what I'm sure was the allotted 3 minutes, it finally rebooted.

So...I'll report these findings back to Apple support in hopes that they'll have a better idea of what's going on and how to fix it.

I found a useful tool on another thread, it's called Etre Check. It runs various checks on your machine and gives you a very detailed report which you can share in various ways. If you're having this or a similar issue, check it out. You can even get it on the App Store.

Sure, though I'm guessing the post you're replying to is gone. Apple sent me an email informing me that they took down my latest report, "because it contained either feedback or a feature request that was not constructive."

I tried removing a closing comment that admittedly didn't contribute anything to the report, but their bots still weren't happy with my post...

Okay, as I suspected my machine did indeed reboot itself with both monitors connected directly to it: 1 via USB C-to-HDMI in the back-left port; the other via USB C-to-DisplayPort in the back-right port. I also had power connected and a usb dongle to connect my wired keyboard and mouse.

I've generated a system report from Apple's "Capture Data" tool and am awaiting a link from Apple Support for uploading this latest report. Will report back with the results of this interaction.

I am so glad that I came across this thread because I am experiencing the EXACT same issue, and I have the same setup as you. I'm using the CalDigit TS3 Plus dock along with two 4K monitors, one over display port from the dock, and one using a USB C to display port cable.

I have the exact same symptoms, like you just described exactly what happens every night to my setup. When I leave my 2017 15" MacBook Pro plugged in over night, when it goes to sleep for an extended period of time, it crashes and shuts down. I've reached out to CalDigit support about the issue and they sent me a replacement dock, but I am still experiencing the same issues. Also, I've submitted a bug report to Apple and they only replied that the "issue has already been reported".

This issue is very annoying, as I rely on my setup to get all my work done, and it is a huge hindrance to have to constantly restart my Mac.

What are some next steps that we can take to get this taken care of? Also, out of curiosity, what is the brand and model of your monitors?

Hi, jhansen00

I'm sorry you're having this issue, too. Apple Support finally got me on the schedule to replace the MLB (Main Logic Board). I take it in next Wednesday and probably won't see it for a week or so.

The thing is, I think they may be taking a stab in the dark, because they scheduled it and then said, "Once you get it back, let us know if it worked." That's not exactly a confidence booster...but hopefully I'm just reading into things.

I don't know if it will help much (or if it's allowed/ill-advised, if anyone knows please speak up), but I'll share my Apple Support Case # in hopes of helping you cut straight to the chase. As you see from this thread, it's been a month since I first reported this issue to them.

Hi everyone,

First of all big thanks to JJDrummer for extensive and detailed error reporting and persistence with support teams!

I'm having exactly the same issue as you guys. I'm using MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017) with a touch bar and CalDigit TS3 Plus with two 4k monitors (Dell P2718Q). I take it to work every day and connect it back to a TS3 Plus in the evening and every week or so it restarts with a message:

Stackshot Reason: Sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds while entering darkwake on way to sleep. Suspected bundle: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily. Thread 0x74.

Failure code:: 0xc5617ac3 00000031

This is very frustrating and I lost my work for a couple of times. It reminds me of my days with Windows laptops.

This was happening with High Sierra and it is happening now with the latest Mojave 10.14.2.

I'm hoping that Apple will find solution to this. JJDrummer please keep us posted if there are any news regarding your case.

I'm glad to hear more people are having this issue as maybe it will bring a solution faster. I have LG 27UD69-W monitors, which I believe are the predecessors to your monitors, JJDrummer. Since durad is having the same issue, and they have Dell monitors, I doubt it is an issue with a specific brand of monitors, so I think that narrows it down a little further.

I've done the troubleshooting steps as you have, and at the request of Apple Support, and I have come to the same results. It's only when I have BOTH monitors plugged into the dock that it happens. I wish I knew of a way to look in further to see what is going on when my Mac is going to sleep. I have no clue what logs to look at; only when my Mac restarts and it reports a problem is when I have something of substance to look at.

I'm going to order a second USB-C to DisplayPort cable today so I can try plugging both monitors directly into my Mac and see what happens.

Also - I looked a little bit into the error message that we are all getting. It seems that darkwake is a synonym for Power Nap on Mac. Power Nap allows for the system to partially wake up from sleep to connect to the internet to check for things like messages, email, and other notifications. There's not a lot of documentation about it, since it's a proprietary Apple feature, so it's naturally hard to diagnose what is causing darkwake to crash the computer. Maybe we could all try disabling Power Nap on our Macs, to see if the issue goes away. Obviously this is not a permanent solution, but at least it will help us narrow down what is causing the issue. I'll post back here once I disable Power Nap and see what happens overnight.

Edit - Do either of you also experience occasional disconnects of one of your monitors? For me, seemingly at random intervals, one of my monitors will go black for a second, display 'NO SIGNAL', and my Mac will readjust to just using the one of the monitors as if I physically disconnected it from the dock. After about 10 seconds or so, the monitor will wake up and reconnect and it will go back to working as normal.
