MacBook Restart itself - Sleep Wake Failure

It happened second time

Crazy thing - it is happened second time before 9am

All I hear is TWO (quick one after another) times "bong" / hime sound which is unusual.

MacBook lis is closed all the times while that sleep durning the night.

I've done obvious things like SMC and NVRAM resets.

I got latest Mojave 10.14.1

got report:

Just wanted to chime in that I suspect this is a bug in macOS's graphics handling somewhere. I saw that Apple was going to replace the main logic board on your machine, but I highly doubt that is going to fix it. I have had this exact same thing happen on a 2018 13" w/ touchbar, 2 2018 15"s w/ touchbar, AND a 2017 15" w/ touchbar.

As has been mentioned previously this just seems to occur when having 2 monitors connected at full 4K resolution. Changing the secondary monitor to be a native "low resolution" 2560x1440 seems to work around the issue such that the Mac doesn't lock up coming out of sleep (I scale the 4K to 2560x1440). Doesn't look the greatest though...

So I've done some additional troubleshooting and everything is pointing in the direction of it being a bug in Mac OS, as Frostbach stated. I also have a video now of catching my Mac crashing that I will try to upload. It seems that before it crashes the fans spin up to full speed and it gets really hot.

Anyway, I completely reinstalled Mojave on my Mac, not transferring anything over. At first, I was hopeful as my Mac slept all night without any issues in the morning. Shortly after using my Mac in the morning, however, I went to breakfast and put my Mac to sleep beforehand. I was gone maybe a total of a half hour. When I came back my Mac had crashed yet again.

I guess now we just need to wait to see if Apple can confirm if it is a bug. For now I do have a workaround that should work for most people.

Download the free app 'Amphetamine' from the App Store. This is a super useful app that allows you to prevent your Mac from sleeping, say if you're downloading a large file and it's going to take a while. It also lets you set up custom triggers that will automatically prevent your Mac from sleeping. For example, I have mine set up so that as long as my Mac is plugged in, charging, and connected to at least 2 monitors, it wont go to sleep. No sleep = no problem. I still have it set to let the displays sleep, though so that is not an issue.

Overall this is a super annoying bug that I hope gets fixed soon.

I have the same problem:

Crashes from Sleep/Wake -

"Stackshot Reason: Sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds while calling power state change callbacks. Suspected bundle: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily..."

15" MacBook Pro 2017, 2 HP Envy 4K displays. Kensington SD5000T dock. Mojave 10.14.3

Did a clean re-install of 10.14.3 and transferred files manually - except now I get a crash every SINGLE time the computer wakes.

I have tried with a CalDigit TS3 Plus Dock (had to return it as it couldn't reliably wake up one of the monitors from sleep). I have reinstalled the OS on two occasions now. Toggled all the settings for PowerNap & Prevent computer from sleeping...

I've deleted the /var/vm/sleepimage file, checked the Mac disk countless times - nothing ...

The only solution that seems to work is to disconnect the TB3 dock, open the laptop, wait 5 minutes for it to get out of sleep and then reconnect the TB3 cable to the dock.

Anyone else have any luck with any other method or setting?

Jan 29, 2019 5:28 PM in response to jhansen00

I have one other potential workaround. I've been running my monitors at full resolution for the past week and half or so and haven't had any issues so far.

I noticed that when I was running my secondary monitor at the lower resolution, I was still having quite a lot of issues with one of the monitors not always coming back on when I woke the computer from sleep. I would have to power cycle the monitor and sometimes I would even have to restart the computer for it to work again.

One thing that always stuck out to me was that my monitor would sometimes wake up and display a notification for an incoming iMessage, etc. when the computer was sleeping. When I looked in the settings, I discovered "Turn on Do Not Disturb: When the display is sleeping". After turning this on my monitor wake issues seemed to disappear. So I subsequently tried putting both my monitors back to full resolution and I have not had any crashes or lock ups with the monitor coming out of sleep since then.

So maybe give that a try - can't explain why it would fix it, but I was never able to go more than a couple days without the system crashing or locking up when coming out of sleep prior to this. It is located at Apple > System Preferences > Notifications > Do Not Disturb > When the display is sleeping

Sorry to hear that the repair didn't fix anything, but thank you for being a trailblazer for the rest of us who are having the same issue!

I did disable notifications while sleeping as Frostbach pointed out, and for the last few days it seems to have fixed the issue. At least now my Mac can sleep and not crash. No notifications while sleeping isn't too big of a deal, since I usually have my phone next to me for the important notifications like messages, email, etc. Still hoping that this issue gets fixed and not ignored because this has obviously consumed a lot of time for all of us!

Mar 15, 2019 5:08 AM in response to Adam Stone1

Ok, this is indeed getting even weirder.

I posted this earlier as a workaround and it seems to have worked for me for quite a while (with the exception I can get it to crash if I plug the dock cable in when the Mac is closed). So maybe give this a try:

Apple > System Preferences > Notifications > Do Not Disturb > When the display is sleeping

In general, I don't believe this is just happening with just Caldigit docks. There are some posts that mention other brands including Elgato and Pluggable. I personally had this originally occur when just directly connecting the two displays to the Mac - I am using a TS3 plus now, however.

Dec 11, 2018 4:32 PM in response to JJDrummer

I'm reporting back on my test of this issue with a new user account on my MBP (to be annoyingly clear, I'm talking about item 2 from my post at 9:33 AM Pacific today) I only "ran" the test that I care about, namely both 4k displays connected and the machine did reboot on its own.

I happened to be in the room when it happened, and leading into the reboot my external displays turned back on as if the computer was going to wake, but stayed in a lit, but black screen. However it looked like my mouse was jumping all around the lower-left quadrant of one of the displays. After what I'm sure was the allotted 3 minutes, it finally rebooted.

So...I'll report these findings back to Apple support in hopes that they'll have a better idea of what's going on and how to fix it.

I found a useful tool on another thread, it's called Etre Check. It runs various checks on your machine and gives you a very detailed report which you can share in various ways. If you're having this or a similar issue, check it out. You can even get it on the App Store.

Hello the_bart123,

I understand that you are having an issue with your Mac restarting. I use my Mac a lot and know how important it is to have your device running smoothly. I'm here to help.

Here is a resource that can assist you:

If your Mac spontaneously restarts or displays a message that it restarted or shut down because of a problem

Please let me know if you are still having issues after reviewing the link.

Have a great day!

I'm chiming in because I have the same issue, and am also using a CalDigit product (Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock, HDMI version). I have two monitors connected via HDMI, both are not at 4k but 1920x1080, both are different brands (Asus & BenQ, 24"). It crashes unexpectedly whenever I am not there (so it has to do with sleeping/napping) and I get this error message in the logs:

Stackshot Reason: Sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds while entering darkwake on way to sleep. Suspected bundle: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily. Thread 0x74.

I'll try some of the fixes mentioned above (disabling power nap, that Amphetamine thing, etc.). I find it interesting that we're all using CalDigit products (I think)?

I have some test results to share:

Initial Setup:

  • 15-inch 2017 MacBook Pro (3.1 GHz Core i7, 16GB RAM, Radeon Pro 560, Intel HD 630, 1TB storage)
    • CalDigit TS3 Plus (with the supplied certified Thunderbolt 3 cable, of course)
      • USB wired keyboard
      • USB wired mouse
      • USB webcam
      • 4k display via DisplayPort cable
      • 4k display via the second Thunderbolt 3 port using a USB_C-to-HDMI cable

Tests Run with above configuration (in all cases I left the computer without shutting down or manually sleeping it for over an hour):

  1. Both monitors connected
    1. System shut down issue reported by OP
  2. TS3 Plus disconnected (so laptop on its own, not even connected to power)
    1. No problems
  3. TS3 Plus disconnected (this time connected to power)
    1. No problems
  4. TS3 Plus connected with DP-connected display only
    1. No problems
  5. TS3 Plus connected with USB_C-to-HDMI-connected display only
    1. No problems

It would seem that my MBP is having a hard time running two 4k displays.

I ran all of the above tests with the Plugable TBT3-UDV Thunderbolt 3 Dock with the same exact results.

Finally, I ran all of the above applicable tests with both docks connected to the MBP each connected to a single 4k display with a DP cable; again, with the same exact results.

Apple support has also asked me to try the following three things:

  1. Reboot in safe mode and see if the problem persists in safe mode
  2. See if the problem persists when logged in as a different user (to rule-out issues with user settings)
  3. Reboot in recovery mode and run disk utility

Item 1 wound up "disconnecting" one of my two external displays from the start (in other words one display worked the other was off and unresponsive) and as such, I did not experience the problem outlined by the OP. This is no surprise to me considering the test results posted above.

Completing item 3 wound up reporting no issues with my disk.

I'll try item 2 this afternoon and report back.

I am so glad that I came across this thread because I am experiencing the EXACT same issue, and I have the same setup as you. I'm using the CalDigit TS3 Plus dock along with two 4K monitors, one over display port from the dock, and one using a USB C to display port cable.

I have the exact same symptoms, like you just described exactly what happens every night to my setup. When I leave my 2017 15" MacBook Pro plugged in over night, when it goes to sleep for an extended period of time, it crashes and shuts down. I've reached out to CalDigit support about the issue and they sent me a replacement dock, but I am still experiencing the same issues. Also, I've submitted a bug report to Apple and they only replied that the "issue has already been reported".

This issue is very annoying, as I rely on my setup to get all my work done, and it is a huge hindrance to have to constantly restart my Mac.

What are some next steps that we can take to get this taken care of? Also, out of curiosity, what is the brand and model of your monitors?

Hi, jhansen00

I'm sorry you're having this issue, too. Apple Support finally got me on the schedule to replace the MLB (Main Logic Board). I take it in next Wednesday and probably won't see it for a week or so.

The thing is, I think they may be taking a stab in the dark, because they scheduled it and then said, "Once you get it back, let us know if it worked." That's not exactly a confidence booster...but hopefully I'm just reading into things.

I don't know if it will help much (or if it's allowed/ill-advised, if anyone knows please speak up), but I'll share my Apple Support Case # in hopes of helping you cut straight to the chase. As you see from this thread, it's been a month since I first reported this issue to them.

I'm chiming it to report that I have almost the exact same issue on a MacBook Pro 15 inch 2016 with two external 4K monitors. For me this issue began when I switched from two 1080p monitors to two 4K monitors. This system was upgraded from High Sierra to Mojave before the issue began. Right now I am on the latest version of Mojave 10.14.3. I am using 2 Samsung U28E850R displays and one is connected to an Elgato TB3 dock while the other is connected via USB-C to DP. Every time I put the system to sleep, it will crash and reboot. Sometimes I get the "Problem Report for System Sleep Wake" and sometimes it just shows up in the console. The full error message is very similar to what has been reported in this thread:

"System Sleep Wake experienced a problem."

Stackshot Reason: Sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds while entering darkwake on way to sleep. Suspected bundle: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily. Thread 0x74.

Failure code:: 0xd44517be 00000031

Unfortunately I have discovered that the issue persists whether I have displays connected or not when I took my laptop home from work this weekend. Sure enough after I closed the lid on Saturday, the next day the system had crashed again.

I feel like I am preaching to the choir here but this is extremely frustrating as I rely on this system as my workstation and in years past I have never had a Mac crash this often. Let's hope that someone at Apple is working on a bug fix.

Sure, though I'm guessing the post you're replying to is gone. Apple sent me an email informing me that they took down my latest report, "because it contained either feedback or a feature request that was not constructive."

I tried removing a closing comment that admittedly didn't contribute anything to the report, but their bots still weren't happy with my post...
