Remove Downloaded Movies From Mac But Not Library

I want to remove some downloaded movies from my MacBook Pro but not delete them from my library, i.e. I still want to be able to see them in the Library on my MacBook but I want them to show the little cloud icon next to them so I can download them again later if I want to watch them again.

The only support article I can find on the issue deletes both the downloaded file and its entry in the Library which is not what I want: I don't want to have to go back into viewing my account and purchased movies and downloading them again from there, I want to see them in my Library.

How can I accomplish this?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS Mojave (10.14)

Hello Richard Morris,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. I see you'd like to delete downloaded movies from your Mac.

You should be able to delete the downloaded files without otherwise "hiding" your purchased content. When you right-click, what Delete options do you have?

While the exact path you'd need will depend on your specific settings, you should be able to navigate to the Movies folder in Finder to delete the actual downloaded files. You can check your library location by opening iTunes and clicking Preferences > Advanced > iTunes Media Folder Location. You'd then want to locate that folder in Finder, then click into the Movies folder. From there, you should be able to delete downloaded movies while preventing them from hiding in your library.

Hopefully this helps to answer your question.

Take care.
