MacBook Air stuck progress bar after logic board replacement? Can't access recovery mode.

I have a 2015 MacBook Air purchased around two years ago that just had a logic board replacement at Apple as an “out of warranty repair” which cost me $760 AUD. The screen backlight wasn’t working which Apple diagnosed as a logic board problem.

I get the repaired machine home and power it on - the screen backlight works so we’re good there. I get to the login screen, select my user profile, enter the password, and the mac goes into a progress bar that gets to about 50% and never progresses from there. I gave it around three hours and the bar was clearly stuck.

Starting the machine in safe mode has no effect, the exact same thing happens on login.

Starting the machine in recovery mode immediately starts the progress bar which also freezes at around 50%. I cannot access disk utility or any other recovery mode features.

Recovery from internet allows me to connect to wifi, then starts a progress bar which gets to 100% but again never progresses from there. I cannot access disk utility or any other recovery mode features.

When I start the machine in hardware diagnostic mode all tests are completed successfully and I get the message “No Issues Found. Reference Code: ADP000”

When I try Verbose mode, I can't see anything unusual except that it goes into a loop searching for wifi connections saying something like "broadcast scan results returned for 'airports' (pid 53)"

Anyone have any ideas? Or is it time to head back to the Apple Store? Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks!

Hello bshaas,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it seems you are experiencing issues with your MacBook Air after getting it repaired by Apple. Since you have already tried some good troubleshooting steps, your next step is to contact Apple or go back to the Apple Store that made the repair, as you mentioned.

Just as a cautionary aside: when you do take it back to Apple (and I second that recommendation, especially since you have a (I believe) 90 day warranty on the replacement), ask to make sure that the new serial number is properly registered with Apple. Some time ago, when I had a logic board replaced, the tech did not and the Apple eco system would refuse to recognize my (old) serial number.
