suddenly the screen has all kind of lines on it. There is no visible damage to the screen or the bezel. The apple diagnostics says nothing is wrong with the machine but obviously there is. Any ideas what would cause this?

You can try an NVRAM reset, do it a few times.

Upon closer inspection the screen is actually cracked in two places, but strangely there is no damage anywhere else on the laptop. I would think that there should be a dent on the aluminum body somewhere, but there isn't. This isn't my laptop and the end user says they never dropped it. Off to the genius bar...
