Macbook Pro mid 2012 won't go to sleep

Thought this started when we downloaded Mojave a few weeks back. When we shut the lid the computer will not go to sleep or does goes to sleep and then light goes on off..computer hot in the AM.

Brought computer to Apple Genius bar they found nothing wrong.

Had then do clean wipe and install High Sierra but issue still exists.

Have to remember to shut computer down which is hard to do after many years (and several macbooks) of just closing the lid. Back to genius bar and they found no software or hardware issues...but somehting must have happened. Any thoughts or others with same issue?

MacBook Pro, 2.9GHz Intel Core i78Gb

Did they advise you to try an SMC reset?

How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

From that article:

The SMC is responsible for these and other low-level functions on Intel-based Mac computers:
Responding to presses of the power button
Responding to the display lid opening and closing on Mac notebooks
Battery management
Thermal management
