Add/delete bookmarks?

MacBook pro (retina, 13 in, early 2015)Memory 8 GB 1867 MHz, DDR3

Processor 2.7GHz, Intel Core i5

El Capitan 10.11.6

Safari 11.0.3 (11604.5.6.1.1)

I cannot get Safari to remember bookmarks deleted or added. I have checked that procedure according to Apple Support Docs and find that while the MacBook Pro is left on, the changes are working, but after I shut down and restart, the bookmarks revert to their previous configuration. The MacBook is not using iCloud.

MacBook pro-OTHER, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), Safari 11.0.3

Make a backup by going to Safari/File/Export Bookmarks.

Might be a corrupt .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Safari/Bookmarks.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
