Since updating to IOS 12, my Word app crashes whenever I try using the dictation function on my iPad Pro 10.5. I have read similar complaints from other users. Microsoft doesn't seem to be in a hurry to fix the problem. Does apple have any recommended work-arounds?

Use Apple Pages.
Not sure what the Review feature/function is in Word, but Siri dictation is built into the Apple Pages app.
I don't think Pages does this.
Your options are limited for office/document style apps on iOS and the ones available have their own special features.
So, you will find document apps that will NOT have features found in Microsoft Office products.
Other apps you could look at that may ( or may not ) have a similar feature to this one Microsoft feature would be notes style apps, like

As a teacher, I have come to rely on Word's Review function with available dictate mode. Does Pages have anything similar?
The review function in Word allows the user to highlight text and then write or dictate a comment linked to the highlighted text.
