I deleted MacPorts and my MacBook Pro crashed.

I downloaded Gimp and in the process I also downloaded MacPorts. I don’t think MacPorts installed properly because when asked started to connect to MySQL workbench database, I could not. I was told port 3306 was no longer available. I do not know anything about Mac ports or how it works. So I wanted to uninstall it. I followed the directions which said go to system preferences, Mac ports and press that uninstall button. But my system preferences did not show a Mac ports icon. So I went to opt, bin, and I deleted the Mac ports folder into the trash bin. Now my system has crashed and I cannot get it to start back up. I think I can start it by doing a system recovery and using terminal to pull the folder out of the trash bin, but I do not know the terminal commands well enough to put the folder back where it belongs. Can someone tell me how to do that?

Also, if and when I get it restored and booted back up, how do I configure my system so I can connect to my database? I am running the latest version of High Serria and using MySQL Workbench, version 8.0. I am also using HughesNet for my provider so that means I have to run an .sh file updating my IP address every time I connect remotely.

See if you can get into single user mode.

You need to get into single use mode for steps one and two that are listed below.

This page will tell you how to get into single user mode.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492

some help on the command you will need.

Unix Navigation Commands

the Unix command line profiles are hidden.

ls -la

from single user mode, you will need to navigate to your home folder.

cd /Users/<your short user name>

You can do

ls -l /Users

to guess your short user name.

the trash can is hidden.

ls -la .Trash

cd .Trash

mv for move or ditto for copy.

you best do

mv -i ...

and

cp -i ...

so you do not clobber any thing. control + c to quit asap.

ditto command for copying a folder.

thank you so very much!!! I can boot it up and log in now. Could you help me with the MacPort problem now? I still cannot connect to MySQL Workbench because it calls for port 3306 which MacPorts evidently changed. MacPorts still does not show on System Preferences so I am assuming it did not completely install. I would like to delete it but everything I find tells me to delete through System Pref. This is what got me in trouble to start with.

super great. You were able to move the folder back to where it was suppose to be and your system is working!🙂!🙂!🙂!

I don't know about MacPorts. I ran that sort of stuff with my 10.4.11 system, but I not now with my 10.10.5 system.

How could MacPorts block access to port 3306? Must of played with the routing tables/firewall/port table to app { forgot the details }.

You should find a MacPorts forum and ask there. StackOver flow is a good place for macOS internals.
