Airport Extreme and Express Connectivity

I have been using an Airport Express Gen 2 as a wi-fi extender for my Airport Extreme base station.

A few weeks ago my Internet connection went out. It came back when I unplugged the Express. I tried to re-connect it again with the same results. The Express is showing that it's in need of a firmware update. But I can't download the firmware because when the Express is plugged in I have no Internet. I can connect the Express by Ethernet to do the firmware update, but I'm reading that the current firmware performs poorly on the Express Gen 2. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I need the extender as there are areas where I need Wi-Fi where the signal is now weak without it.

Reset the Express.. do this by holding in reset for about 10sec until the Front LED flashes rapidly.


Reconfigure it correctly.. to extend wireless from the Extreme.

Best method is to do it in the same room as the Extreme.. plug the Express into power.. but no ethernet can be used.

Run through the setup wizard in the airport utility of your computer or iDevice.

Once complete update the Express and move it back to where it should be located.. it CANNOT use ethernet in this setup .. if you want to use ethernet the configuration is different.. and if you plug an Express setup for wireless extend into your main network by ethernet it will cause network collapse you have experienced.


Ignore the firmware upgrade.. it is total dud.


In the airport utility preferences.

Uncheck all monitoring and firmware checks.

It will still flash amber at you every now and then.. a reboot often fixes it.. or ignore it .. put a tape over the light..


Apple should pull that firmware.. totally bad.
