remember play back position on all music?

my ipod touch used to remember where I stopped listening....

particularly handy for audiobooks esp at work, were I might stop to handle another task without the ability to look at the screen to see what disc I am on in a playlist of the book series

I don't remember if it was after an update, but that ability has been lost...

when I turn off and restart, the position is lost

I've looked through settings but I don't see a setting for that

how do I get this feature back?

There are two ways of getting audiobooks into iTunes:

  1. import them as Audiobooks
  2. import them as straightforward audio, or songs (so they are marked as Media Kind is "Music") and then either:
    1. leave the audio as Media Kind is Music
    2. change the Media Kind to Audiobook

... and the Remember Playback Position depends on what you do.

If you add audio to your iTunes Library:

  • as an Audiobook, iTunes will mark it to Remember Playback Position
  • as a song - and leave it as a Media Kind is Music, it will not have Remember Playback Position turned on (so you will have to do it manually)
  • and then change the Media Kind is Audiobook, iTunes should change the Remember Playback Position to on and lock it so that you cannot change it

I suspect therefore, that you may have imported the audiobooks as straightforward audio and they remain in your Library as Media Kind is Music, so iTunes thinks they are songs. You can set any song to Remember Playback Position. In your iTunes Library, highlight the audiobook and use the Edit/Song Info/Options>Remember Playback Position (and tick the box). If you use this method, I suggest that you also set Skip when shuffling, so that the audiobooks do not start playing when you are playing your music in Shuffle mode. (The setting is just below the Remember Playback Position, see the screenshots below.)

Notice that as Audiobooks, the two options mentioned are greyed out and cannot be changed.
