unexpected error code (error code 0)

I have been backing my files and folders up onto the same USB for over a year. For some reason, I'm not sure what, I am now confronted by the above message. I have not reformatted the USB stick or used it on a Windows computer. It is currently formatted as MS-DOS (FAT32). (I'm not sure if that's what it should be).
