iTunes temp files issue solution

iTunes version 12.8


This is actually a response to a previously unanswered question about iTunes constantly creating tmp files. Other replies suggested checking permissions and anti-virus settings, neither of which solved my problem. This fix worked for me…


From your home folder, navigate to Music > iTunes and remove the files listed below. I moved mine to the trash but didn't empty the trash — just in case!

  • iTunes Library Extras.itdb
  • iTunes Library Genius.itdb
  • iTunes Library.itl
  • iTunes Library.xml
  • iTunes Music Library.xml


When I launched iTunes, it re-created those files. No music was lost. Everything plays fine. NO MORE TEMP FILES!
