Hi. I have dug out an old family iBook G4 which I am planning on using to convert old camcorder DV tapes using the machine's FireWire. Am I right in thinking the G4 has a 9 pin connector and therefore I need a 4 pin to 9 pin cable (my camcorder is 4 pin, I think - small).

An iBook G4 will have a 6-pin FireWire port; these are also known as FireWire 400 ports.

Make sure you use the 6 pin Firewire 400. The 4 pin is only designed for the digital camcorders that support it. The extra two pins also supply power. But more importantly the 4 pin connectors will not fit on your computer.
Thank you. Turns out it's actually the Powerbook, so it has both a 400 and 800 port?
A 15-inch or 17-inch Aluminum PowerBook G4 will have both. Other models only have a FireWire 400 port.
