Even if Office 2011 will forever stay 32 bit, why can't they just leave it alone instead of disabling it by taking away the save feature.
Only Microsoft can explain their decisions. But Office 2011 is completely unsupported software now, and they're trying to get people to stop using it. Mostly for security reasons I would imagine since any such flaws, from minor to severe will not be fixed.
I posted a link to the Insider page at Microsoft above.
How much you pay for Office 2019 or 365 depends on what you buy, and where from. The "what" being with, or without Outlook.
There are only two price choices for Office 365. $100 per year, or $70. The more expensive option allows you to install Office 365 on up to any six devices you want. That can be any combination of Mac, Windows or iOS. The $70 version is for a single device license.
Just about anywhere you look, the one-time cost perpetual license Office 2019 is $129 for the Home version without Outlook, and $229 with.

How do I join Microsoft Insiders Program and how much does it cost?
You don't need to as they have released the 64-bit version of Office 2016. Just update it.
If you don't already have Office 2016, it's irrelevant as Office 2019 has been released.
However, I think there was an option to join the program in the Update program for Office.
You may need to download their license clearing tool, then re-enter your license code for 2011.
I had the same thing happen with 2016. It kept asking for an Office 2019 code. I called Microsoft and they walked me through downloading the license removal tool, then reinstalling 2016. It may work the same for 2011.
As Kurt mentioned, you cannot update 2011 to 64-bit. You need 2016 or later for 64-bit.
Nobody can explain why Microsoft released a 32-bit version of software five years after Apple made the shift to 64-bit. I don't even imagine Microsoft could dream up a good excuse.
Use a current version, like Office 2016. However, I'm not sure how that ties into the whole 32-bit app thing.
If you join Microsofts "insider" program, you can run a 64-bit version of Office, but the 32-bit version is completely compatible with Mojave, as far as I could tell when I was running it.
64-bit and encryption are two different discussions, and regarding Microsoft's future product planning, only they know what that may be. Office 2016 and Office 2019 are 64-bit already.
That was an odd design choice. But at least they made that transition cost free for Office 2016 users. The version was 15.xx at first as 32 bit. Then, even though it retained the name Office 2016, the version number jumped to 16.9. That was the first 64 bit version.
Ever considered to use Pages and Numbers? It’s free and you can open your Office-files with it and docs you make e.g. In Pages can be saved as Word-docs in case not-Apple users should be able to read them
Folks are having some luck using Office 2011 in Mojave. Mostly if they're using basic functions.
There will be no more updates for Office 2011 or older. They will be forever 32 bit, and at the last point update released. The only way to upgrade is to purchase a newer version. That is currently either the perpetual license Office 2019, or the monthly/yearly subscription Office 365.
I bought Office 2011 at the same time when I bought my Mac OS X. I use Word and Excel almost daily, and it has been basic but amply adequate. Now I kept getting the screen requiring me to "activate" by buying the Office 365 (for $69.99/year) or else wouldn't let me "save" after I input new content in the Excel. Even if Office 2011 will forever stay 32 bit, why can't they just leave it alone instead of disabling it by taking away the save feature. That's so mean-spirited. How does one join the Microsofts "insider" program to run a 64-bit version of Office? And how much would one have to pay to get a 64-bit version?
Take a few moments to read the responses above, which already explain what to do.
My operating system was recently upgraded to Mojave. However I can't seem to open documents from office, including Word documents and Excel spreadsheets. What do I need to do? Right now?
I can't access the documents in Word or the Excel spreadsheets.
I use Microsoft Excel. I'm receiving warnings that it will not work in future because it's not 64 bit software. What do I do?
Already explained if you read more of the responses in this topic.
